Erik ten Hag has sold two Manchester United players since taking over as boss; Andreas Pereira moving to Fulham and James Garner leaving for Everton.
He's got some way to go before reaching the 15 squad players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offloaded during his near-three-year stay, although some fans may feel more should have left this summer given last season's woes. Solskjaer wasn't afraid to wield his axe when it came to discarding unneeded players.
The Norwegian allowed those who arrived for big money to leave if they did not produce the goods. He also showed the door to those who were surplus to requirements and taking up vital resources, which funded the arrivals of the likes of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson
Good enough to play 14 matches for the first-team, mainly under Louis van Gaal, Borthwick-Jackson headed to Oldham after he was deemed surplus to requirements at United and spent one season there before moving on, yet again. Currently with Burton, the defender has featured 51 times for them overall.

Matteo Darmian
Darmian spent four years at Old Trafford without really showcasing his ability. Since his exit, the defender lifted the Serie A title with Inter Milan in the 2020/21 season before winning the Coppa Italia last season.

Marouane Fellaini
Technically it was Fellaini who was the first shown the door by Solskjaer. Now into the twilight of his career at 34, he is still with SD Luneng (Shandong Taishan) after moving directly to the Chinese Super League outfit in February 2019. Fellaini has since cut off those trademark curls, by the way.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah
Now 18 months have passed since Fosu-Mensah embarked on his new adventure in Germany after leaving United. A ruptured ACL and a hamstring injury has restricted his game-time at Bayer Leverkusen, having started just one Bundesliga game since February 2021.

Ander Herrera
Perhaps one of the few departures other United managers would have taken back in a heartbeat. The 32-year-old played 95 times for Paris Saint-Germain following his 2019 exit but is now at former club Athletic Bilbao after being offered limited minutes in the French capital.

Daniel James
In an eye-catching twist, James was sold by Solskjaer on deadline day last summer only days after being handed a start against Wolves. Not only that, his departure to bitter rivals Leeds paved the way for Cristiano Ronaldo to seal a grand return to United. James secured another deadline day switch from Leeds to Fulham this month, making his debut against Tottenham 10 days ago.

Romelu Lukaku
Where to start with this one? A goal-packed spell at Inter Milan proved the catalyst for their first Serie A triumph in 10 years and, in turn, suggested United might have been wrong to sell Lukaku. However, the big Belgian was unable to hit those heights since a jaw-dropping £97.5m return to Chelsea and has consequently returned to his former San Siro club.

Joel Pereira
Pereira was one of two goalkeeping departures last summer along with Sergio Romero. He played just three times for the United senior side, keeping two clean sheets in the Premier League against Crystal Palace and in the FA Cup versus Wigan. He's now plying his trade in the Eredivisie.

Marcos Rojo
Rojo completed a welcome return home to Boca Juniors last winter. It seemed to be the best fit for all parties. Yet the 32-year-old was unavailable for several weeks after he was dished out a huge ban for his part in a tunnel brawl. And this week, the centre-half was sent off for kicking an opponent in the head during a high challenge.

Sergio Romero
Released at the end of his contract, that decision marked the end of six years at the club for Romero. After a less than smooth departure, he joined relegated Serie A club Venezia before returning to native Argentina to play alongside Rojo at Boca Juniors. He had formerly been linked with a shock return to Old Trafford this summer.

Alexis Sanchez
A curious and expensive case, as far as United were concerned. His stint at Inter Milan peaked with a Serie A title and now the 33-year-old is vying for glory in Ligue 1 with Marseille following switch this summer.

Chris Smalling
Similarly to Sanchez, the England defender first left Old Trafford for Serie A on loan in the summer of 2019, but there was to be no way back for him, either. Smalling has been a stalwart for Roma, a club where English rejects have flourished in recent years. He helped Jose Mourinho lift Roma's first-ever European trophy last season as they won the inaugural Europa Conference League.

Antonio Valencia
Valencia was a popular figure during his decade-long stint at United. After that, though, it proved to be a swift fall from grace as he briefly represented LDU Quito (Ecuador) and Queretaro FC (Mexico), before opting to hang up his boots, aged 35, last summer. Overall he played 339 games for United — and won two Premier League titles.

James Wilson
Wilson only left United in 2019, but has already represented three clubs since then. First signing for Aberdeen, he returned to the area with Class of 92-owned Salford. The 26-year-old touched down at Port Vale last season and guided them to League Two promotion via the play-offs, scoring a goal in the final against Mansfield.

Ashley Young
Underrated for large parts of his career, the former United winger opted to sign for another old employer, Aston Villa last summer. Although not a regular, he offers vital experience and versatility to Steven Gerrard.
