Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign away at Napoli on Wednesday night, but the Serie A giants are a familiar opposition for the Reds in European competition.
Not only has Jurgen Klopp 's side faced the Italian outfit multiple times in the Champions League in the last five or so years, they first came up against each other in the group stage of the Europa League back in the 2010/11 season. Before 2018, their only trip to Napoli was during Roy Hodgson's era and the boss at the time named a rather youthful side to play at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Nevertheless, the Reds earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw away and a late hat-trick from Steven Gerrard in the reverse fixture at Anfield saw Liverpool emerge victorious on that occasion. The team that lined up in Naples 12 years ago is a huge contrast to the world class talent Klopp has at his disposal today - here's what happened to the team that was picked by Hodgson for the draw in October 2010.

Pepe Reina
One of the only senior players to be named in the starting line-up. The Spanish goalkeeper was a key member of the Liverpool squad between 2005 and 2013.
He made over 390 appearances for the Reds before various spells with Napoli, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Aston Villa and Lazio. Now aged 40, he returned to Villarreal earlier this summer - a club he spent a short time with between 2002 and 2005 before he made the move to Anfield.
Reina is yet to make an appearance in La Liga this season for Villarreal, but started both of their UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying matches against HNK Hajduk Split last month.
Paul Konchesky
Defender Paul Konchesky joined Liverpool from Fulham in the summer of 2010 and made just 18 appearances in his short time with the club. Less than six months after his arrival at Anfield, he was loaned out to Nottingham Forest for the remainder of the 2010/11 season.
The following summer, just a year into his Liverpool career, he was sold to Leicester City in a permanent deal for a reported fee of £1.5m. He had just one loan spell during his time at Leicester and later joined Gillingham on a free transfer in 2016.
Konchesky took a brief career break between November 2017 and July 2018 before joining East Thurrock United for a little over a month before he retired in August that year.
Jamie Carragher
One of the only other senior players named in the line-up that night, Jamie Carragher offered some much needed experience to the side before he was replaced by Sotirios Kyrgiakos at half-time.
The defender spent his entire career with the Reds and made upwards of 700 appearances for the club. The former England international retired in 2013 and is now working as a pundit for Sky Sports.
Martin Kelly
Martin Kelly started at right-back against Napoli at that night and he went on to make over 60 appearances for the Reds. He was promoted from the under-18s two years previous and spent a short time on loan at Huddersfield Town in 2009.
He eventually departed Liverpool on a permanent deal in 2014 and joined Crystal Palace. Kelly spent eight years at Selhurst Park, reuniting with Roy Hodgson between 2017 and 2021.
Now, with 154 Premier League appearances under his belt, the 32-year-old joined Championship side West Brom last week on a free transfer.
Martin Skrtel
Slovakia international Martin Skrtel made over 300 appearances for Liverpool between 2008 and 2016 and is a legend for his national side. He left Anfield for Fenerbahce in 2016 and has since had spells at Atalanta and Basaksehir.
He returned to Slovakia in 2021 with Spartak Trnava where he spent last season. Skrtel announced his retirement from professional football in May this year, saying long-term back problems forced him into making a decision the decision.
However, he now appears to be playing in the eighth tier in his homeland with Hajskala Raztocno and he has since shared photos in action with the team.
Jay Spearing
Jay Spearing, now 33, was one of the younger players to start against Napoli in 2010. He was loaned out to Leicester City less than six months later and then to Bolton Wanderers for the 2012/13 season - a move that was made permanent at the end of the campaign.
He's since had spells at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Tranmere before returning to Liverpool earlier this summer. Spearing is now a coach with the Reds' under-18s and is also playing with the under-21s.
Spearing has made a couple of appearances so far and is acting as a role model for the younger players in the side. The decision to call time on his professional career and take on the role as a reserve player and coach in Liverpool's academy was one he described as a 'no-brainer' in an interview with GOAL earlier this summer.
Christian Poulsen
Christian Poulsen joined Liverpool from Juventus in the summer of 2010 and was only his ninth appearance for the club at the time. He spent just one season on Merseyside before he joined French side Evian on a free transfer a year later.
He's since spent time at Ajax and FC Copenhagen before he retired in December 2016.
Jonjo Shelvey
Jonjo Shelvey, at the time, was only a teenager and he joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2010. He later spent the first half of the 2011/12 season on loan at Blackpool and eventually departed Anfield on a permanent basis in 2013 when he joined Swansea, having made over 60 appearances for the Reds.
Shelvey later joined Newcastle United in January 2016 where he's gone on to make close to 300 appearances. Now 30, he remains on Newcastle's books but is currently sidelined through injury.
Milan Jovanovic
The game against Napoli was just one of 18 appearances Milan Jovanovic made for Liverpool during his short spell with the club. He was yet another player brought in by Hodgson in the summer of 2010, who left the following year.
He left Anfield for Belgian side Anderlecht before calling time on his football career in the summer of 2013.
Ryan Babel
Ryan Babel joined Liverpool from Ajax in the summer of 2007 and racked up just shy of 150 appearances for the club. Signed as an exciting young prospect, it wasn't to be at Anfield for forward and he later joined Hoffenheim a matter of months after the Napoli game.
He's since had spells in the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and the UAE - as well as a brief return to England with Fulham for the second-half of the 2018/10 season. He's currently playing with Eyupspor in the second tier of Turkish football and he also has an extensive property portfolio in Amsterdam and Miami and runs a music label in Los Angeles.
David N'Gog
David N'Gog signed for Liverpool from French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2008. The Napoli clash was one of 94 appearances he made for the Reds during his thee-year spell on Merseyside.
He was sold to Bolton in the summer of 2011 and has since spent time at Swansea, Reims and even Scottish side Ross County. He announced his retirement from football in 2020, aged just 31.
