Silent Witness themselves, whilst having expectations for the new series, were left asking one major question as season 25 prepared to launch on Monday night - how did things end last time round?
It's hard to believe, but it's now been a quarter of a century since Silent Witness first made its debut on BBC One. The BBC show first saw Amanda Burton make the switch from ITV’s Peak Practice to star as Dr Sam Ryan before leaving during the eighth series.
Since then the show has also featured the likes of William Gaminara, Tom Ward and Emilia Fox in lead roles, with Emilia still very much in the fold these days as Nikki Alexander, as Amanda also makes a return as Professor Sam Ryan for the 25th anniversary.
Emilia's character was at the centre of a chilling series 19 cliff-hanger in 2017 when Nikki was buried alive, laving millions of viewers fearing the worst.

Thankfully, Nikki survived that ordeal, with Silent Witness fans also heavily invested in the will they/won't they relationships between Nikki and Jack.
What happened in the last series of Silent Witness?
Season 24 kicked off with Nikki and Jack visiting a high-security prison to get to the bottom of an inmate's suspicious death. However, what should have been a pretty much routine investigation for the pair, ended up with Nikki having to deal with some disturbing memories, having found out that the dead prisoner's cellmate was a student who was responsible for the mass shooting she witnessed a decade before.
There was a gripping two part conclusion to the last series of Silent Witness with double header Matters of Life and Death concerned with the death of an elderly resident named Robbo in a care home. His death was initially put down to natural causes, but it soon became clear that something more sinister was afoot as the whole care home was left in jeopardy due to a storm raged outside, posing a huge risk to staff and patients.
The fact that the elderly resident's death was a murder became apparent when Nikki's new colleague Simone received a text from the person responsible saying they'd kill again. Outside of the care home, viewers were once again left fuming with Jack after he ended up waking up next to a woman he went on a blind date with, as fans willed him and Nikki to get together.
Jack, while dealing with a concerning incident at home involving his dad, also found himself in the frame for the death of another care home resident, Derek, after being left alone with him. However, after doing some investigating of his own, he found out that another resident, Beattie, was the woman behind both Derek and Robbo's deaths, having taken action to stop their suffering.
There was delight right near the end of the tenth and final episode of series 10, when the final scene saw Jack and Nikki give into their feelings - finally!
