What happened between Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli after confirmed Arsenal transfer

Leandro Trossard's arrival at Arsenal will increase competition for places across the forward line.

The Gunners were left short in this department after letting Nicolas Pepe join OGC Nice on a season-long loan deal during the summer transfer window and not signing a replacement despite links to the likes of Raphinha, Mykhailo Mudryk and Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

And the situation worsened during the World Cup break with Gabriel Jesus suffering a knee injury whilst in action for Brazil and having undergone surgery he's not expected to be available for selection anytime soon. Whilst a setback for Reiss Nelson during the friendly against Juventus last month effectively forced Arsenal's hand in the transfer market.

After missing out to Chelsea for Mudryk - as well as Joao Felix for that matter - the north London outfit completed a deal for Trossard on Friday afternoon and the Belgium international's ability to operate in all three positions in the Arsenal attack makes him the ideal signing.

"They told me they really like me as a player, that I would really suit the system and how they want to play," the 28-year-old said. "It helps me that I’m versatile and that I can play in different positions. They’re looking forward to working with me and vice versa. I’m really excited to work with them and I think Mikel is a top coach.

"I like to be in the pocket behind the striker. On the wings, I can explore myself as well. I’m comfortable in either of those positions but if I were to choose, behind the striker - but it all depends on the system.

"I think I'm good in 1v1s. I'm composed in the box, so if I get chances, I can finish them off. I can hopefully help the team to win tough games - I’m great in tight spaces. I’m quite experienced as well, so I hope I can bring that to the team as well."

With Trossard tipped to make an instant impact for Arsenal by Mikel Arteta, his arrival should keep Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli, in particular, on their toes as he often operates through the middle or from the left-hand side.

However, despite being rivals for a place in the Spaniard's best starting XI for the remainder of the season, behind-the-scenes footage of Trossard's first day at the club showed a warm embrace between the pair in the hallway at London Colney as they exchanged pleasantries prior to a training session.

In fact, this isn't new for the Brazilian. He effectively undertook a new role back in the summer after helping Fabio Vieira settle into his new surroundings after his £30m move from Porto as it was noticeable on both overseas tours to Germany and the USA that the pair struck up a bromance.
