What Does Kevin Costner Leaving Yellowstone Mean For S5 Part 2? Your 3 Min Refresher.

Alright Yellowstone fans, saddle up because after what seems like 5EVA the show is finally returning with part two of season 5. And thank GOD because we were left with a lot of questions at the end of part one, including the off-screen Kevin Costner — aka Yellowstone patriarch John Dutton — leaving the show

With part two set to hit our screens in just a few days, it’s high time we dust off our cowboy hats and remember what went down on the Dutton ranch.

Here is what happened in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1

Here’s where we left your fave family :

John Dutton

Season 5 kicked off with John Dutton reluctantly taking the reins as Montana’s governor. John swapped his boots for a suit, but don’t worry he’s still keeping tabs on his ranch. His new position forged a road to become unexpected besties with Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), the local Native American reservation leader.

Beth Dutton

Our fave couple. (Image: Yellowstone/Stan)

Meanwhile, Beth (Kelly Reilly) continued to be the family’s most iconic diva, juggling her new role as John’s chief of staff while keeping her claws sharp for any potential threats. And oh my Lord, were there threats. She even got into a physical scuffle with Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo), John’s former flame and environmental activist who’s now under house arrest. Classic Beth.

On a more wholesome note, Beth and Rip (Cole Hauser) got hitched and are raising teen runaway Carter (Finn Little). Unfortunately, it seems like this might be the calm before the storm because Rip still doesn’t know about Beth’s inability to have kids, courtesy of Jamie’s secret teenage sterilisation. I’m guessing that’s going to be a bit of a thing in part two, but I swear to God if they ruin the healthiest relationship Beth has ever had I WILL RIOT!

Speaking of Rip, there have been a bunch of fan theories that things don’t end well for him in part two, which again please don’t take this man away from Beth. Hauser was asked about the theories in an interview with Parade and he said, “You’ll have to wait. Listen, Rip does a lot of the killing. I’ll tell you that.”

So basically expect a lot more killing in part two.

Jamie Dutton

This man needs to just chill for an ep. (Image: Yellowstone/Stan)

Jamie (Wes Bentley) was giving all round bad vibes in the first part of Season 5. After grappling with the fact that he is adopted he went full villain mode, working against the family and even trying to get John impeached.

Oh, and he’s romantically involved with Sarah Atwood (Kelsey Asbille), another scheming lawyer out to ruin the Duttons. All his double agent stuff caught up with him though, and Beth and John agreed it was time to take Jamie to the “Train Station” (Yellowstone code for “let’s off him”).

Kayce Dutton and Monica

The writers must protect them at all costs. (Image: Yellowstone/Stan)

Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica  (Kelsey Asbille) faced some truly awful challenges this season. They tragically lost their baby after Monica got into a car accident and spent the season dealing with their grief.

Why did Kevin Costner leave and what does this mean for his storyline?

Now there is an elephant in the room – Kevin Costner’s exit. Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone, claims Costner wanted to prioritise his passion project — another western called Horizon that aims to be a four movie epic.

“My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct. He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone,” he said to The Hollywood Reporter.

However, Costner sings a different tune. When speaking to Deadline he insisted Yellowstone had “first position” in his priorities, stating, “I didn’t do Horizon because I was tired of doing Yellowstone. That’s a bullshit story.”

Costner even claimed there were “no scripts” for the final stretch of Yellowstone episodes.

The boys are definitely fighting, but whatever the truth is, it looks like we’ll be saying goodbye to John Dutton one way or another. It’ll be interesting to see how they do it — if they kill him off or explain his absence in a different way.

Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 will premiere Monday, November 11 at 6:30pm AEDT on Stan.
