What does Broncos hiring Vance Joseph mean for Matt Patricia-Patriots?

News of former New England Patriots offensive play-caller Matt Patricia interviewing for the vacant Denver Broncos defensive coordinator role nearly broke the internet.

Imagine what it would have been like if he actually landed the job.

The Broncos hired Vance Joseph to take the defensive lead instead, which likely leaves the door wide open for Patricia to return in a senior advisory role with New England.

But when it comes to the longtime Patriots coach’s future, the tea leaves are reading the complete opposite, particularly with his willingness to actually interview for another major coaching gig.

If anything, it proves he isn’t eager to jump back into the watchtower in less of a hands-on role with the football team. Sure, he might have been shaken by the relentless backlash from his debut as an offensive play-caller, but it doesn’t appear as if he’s looking to wallow over the misery of what could have been for the 2022 Patriots.

If he’s truly looking to jump back on the horse, he might be better off leaving New England in the rearview and building his image elsewhere, whether it’s as a defensive coordinator or another role.

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was obviously disappointed with the offense last season, and the onus for an entire fan base’s frustrations was basically laid at Patricia’s feet.

Sure, he probably could go back to New England for another season. But honestly, would he even want to at this point?

A fresh start can cure a lot of things, and it just feels like both sides could really use a do-over button after a tumultuous season. The criticism of Patricia has gone a bit overboard from a talent perspective. He’s still a worthy defensive coach in the NFL that will continue to see doors open with opportunities.

But in the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business, he has some serious work to do to repair his image.
