What Daniel Levy must do to convince Julian Nagelsmann to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham

In a near-exact repeat of 2021, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy faces a monumental managerial decision this summer. On April 19, 2021 it was announced that Jose Mourinho had been sacked by Spurs with Ryan Mason to take temporary charge, and 706 days later Antonio Conte departed the club by mutual consent with Cristian Stellini and Mason running first-team duties until the end of the season.

It is extremely fair to say that Levy got his Mourinho replacement very wrong. In fact the entire search for the former Chelsea manager's successor was a complete shambles, from a failed attempt to bring Conte to the club to the fan backlash unleashed when it looked as though Gennaro Gattuso was to take over. Eventually Nuno Espirito Santo came in.

However, no less than three months into the 2021/22 season the ex-Wolves head coach was sacked after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United. Conte then came in as his replacement and spent 16 months in north London before he ultimately suffered the same fate after a clear breakdown in the relationship between the Italian and Levy.

The Tottenham chairman has been given a second chance though to get a managerial replacement sorted early with a number of possible replacements likely already on his shortlist. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is the obvious name while Luis Enrique and Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner are said to have admirers in north London.

Conte leaving Tottenham seemed inevitable to occur at the end of the season but that decision was fast-tracked and with it came some rather exciting news. On Friday, just two days before Conte's confirmed exit, Julian Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich, with Thomas Tuchel replacing him.

The 35-year-old being available is a massive opportunity for Spurs to appoint a young, progressive coach who could successfully oversee a major rebuild, while also convincing the club's top stars, such as Harry Kane, to remain at the club.

An immediate return to management with Tottenham after his dismissal in Germany seemed unlikely though and Spurs' own statement proved that. Having lost just three games all season Nagelsmann was believed to be shocked by his sacking and is therefore keen to "collect his thoughts" first before deciding his next move, according to the Telegraph.

It has also been claimed by German news outlet Bild, that any club wanting to appoint Nagelsmann before the end of the season would have to pay a hefty fee to Bayern. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has now weighed in on Nagelsmann's future revealing there are four things he will look to have at his next club.

In his latest YouTube video, via the Boot Room, Romano said: “He doesn’t want to miss the next step. For him it’s crucial to have a project, it’s not just about the money, the contract – he wants to see a project, a vision.

“He wants to have an influence and also a good relationship with the board. This is really crucial for Julian Nagelsmann after what happened at Bayern and so, this is why at the moment we have a lot of stories.

“But from my understanding, Nagelsmann will take some time and then will make a decision on when he will be ready to return to coaching. If it will be now, or at the end of the season. But for sure, Nagelsmann is going to wait for a very good project and not just for money."
