What Daniel Levy is doing to make sure Julian Nagelsmann is Tottenham's next manager

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy looks to be playing a crucial role in the clubs pursuit to make Julian Nagelsmann their next manager. The young German coach was sacked by Bayern Munich around the same time Antonio Conte's mutual exit was confirmed and he is now one of the favourites to permanently succeed the Italian.

Chelsea parting ways with Graham Potter placed them as favourites to land Nagelsmann, however in a dramatic turn of events he exited the new manager race in west London earlier this month. Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino then became the clear favourite with an appointment now very close to occurring.

Reservations on a number of topics caused Nagelsmann to pull out of the Chelsea running, and those doubts could creep in when Tottenham's formal approach undoubtedly arrives. Managing director Fabio Paratici departed the club recently after an unsuccessful appeal to his 30-month worldwide ban, while the future of star man Harry Kane is also up in the air.

Ryan Mason will close out the 2022/23 season as interim head coach, as he also did two years ago, while Levy must now appoint another new manager for the fourth time in under four years. Nagelsmann could be that man, with Miguel Delaney revealing Levy's role in trying to bring the former RB Leipzig coach in along with his own demands to take the job.

In his Reading the Game column for The Independent, he wrote: “Daniel Levy is making a huge pitch for Julian Nagelsmann. The German has recently been resistant but is at least willing to listen to Tottenham Hotspur and whether they meet his considerable demands. Had he agreed a Chelsea contract, sources say it would have been one of the biggest in the game."

Delaney continued: “Nagelsmann also wants control. So much of this comes down to Levy’s command of the club. He is acutely conscious of the growing criticism, as his statement on Monday about Cristian Stellini’s departure indicated. It does mean Spurs are back where they were at at least three points in the last year.

“They need a “statement” manager as a response to recent failures. The big question is whether this is really conducive to long-term thinking. We have to wait and see. The player committee, so name-checked in that statement, will be especially observant. They are known to consist of Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris, with the future of the captain still so uncertain.”
