As rumors continue to swirl about a possible divorce between head coach Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans, it begs the question: what could Tennessee get if they trade Vrabel?
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the situation between Vrabel and the Titans is “not settled” and the two sides are expected to meet after the season to determine what, if any, changes will be made.
Schefter adds that people around the league believe there is the potential for both sides to want to part ways, while also noting that others believe Vrabel isn’t happy with the current situation.
Of course, the Titans would be crazy to just fire Vrabel, as history suggests he would likely net at least a first-round pick, especially when you consider how highly thought of he is around the NFL.
With a Vrabel trade seemingly becoming more possible by the day, let’s take a look at the history of head coach trades, with an assist coming from our friends over at Broncos Wire.
1970: Colts trade Don Shula to Dolphins
Compensation: Colts received first-round pick.
This wasn’t exactly a trade, as the NFL forced the Dolphins to send the Colts a first-round pick for violating tampering rules. It is still widely recognized as one of the head coach trades in NFL history, though.
1997: Patriots trade Bill Parcells to Jets
Compensation: Pats received first-, second-, third- and fourth-round picks.
This was another deal setup by the league after the Jets were originally able to go around the rules in order to hire Parcells. That haul would be unfathomable in this day and age.
1999: Packers trade Mike Holmgren to Seahawks
Compensation: Packers received second-round pick.
2000: Jets trade Bill Belichick to Patriots
Compensation: Jets received first-, fourth- and fifth-round picks.
2002: Raiders trade Jon Gruden to Bucs
Compensation: Raiders received two first-round picks and $8 million.
2006: Jets trade Herm Edwards to Chiefs
Compensation: Jets received fourth-round pick
2019: Cardinals trade Bruce Arians to Bucs
Compensation: Cardinals received sixth-round pick, traded away seventh-round pick with Arians.
2023: Saints trade Sean Payton to Broncos
Compensation: Saints received first- and second-round picks, traded away third-round pick with Payton.
