England begin their quest to end the wait for World Cup success today (Monday, December 21) as they face Iran in their Group B opener.
Carlos Queiroz's side romped to World Cup qualification in the AFC Section of the qualifiers but will be looking to pull off one of the biggest shocks in the tournament's history when they meet this afternoon.
It is the fourth World Cup finals that Iran have featured in but have picked up just two wins across the competition. During the 2018 finals, they needed a stoppage-time penalty from Aziz Bouhaddouz.

For the Three Lions, they are looking to build upon their positive showings in the previous World Cup and also their Euro 2020 performance as they were semi-finalists and finalists, respectively.
Gareth Southgate is in his sixth year as England boss but has come underfire recently for their showings in the UEFA Nations League as they failed to win any of their group matches, including a sobering defeat to minnows Hungary at Molineux. However the opportunity against Iran poses a chance to get off to a strong group campaign.
