Women’s slalom _ Erin Mielzynski, Brampton, Ont., placed 17th overall with a time of one minute, 47.52 for the two runs; Laurence St-Germain, Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges, Que., was 18th (1:47.57); Ali Nullmeyer, Toronto, 21st (1:47.96); Amelia Smart, Invermere, B.C., 27th (1:49.32).
CURLING
Men _ Canada (Brad Gushue, St. John’s, N.L.; Mark Nichols, Labrador City, N.L.; Brett Gallant, Charlottetown; and Geoff Walker, Beaverlodge, Alta.) opened the tournament with a 10-5 win over Denmark.
FREESTYLE SKIING
Men’s Big Air _ Evan McEachran, Oakville, Ont., finished ninth overall with a score of 115.50.
LUGE
Men’s doubles _ Justin Snith, Calgary, and Tristan Walker, Cochrane, Alta., are ranked seventh after the opening two runs (1:57.918).
SNOWBOARDING
Women’s half pipe _ Elizabeth Hosking, Longueuil, Que., was ninth in qualifying with a score of 70.50; Brooke D’Hondt, Calgary, 10th (70.00) _ both advanced to the finals.
Women’s snowboard cross _ Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George, B.C., won the bronze medal; Tess Critchlow, Big White, B.C., was second in the small final to rank sixth overall; Audrey McManiman, St-Ambroise-de-Kildare, Que., and Zoe Bergermann, Erin, Ont. were third and fourth in their quarterfinal races _ neither advanced.
Men’s half pipe _ Liam Gill, Calgary, had a top run of 16.75 to rank 23rd in qualifying _ did not advance to the finals.
SPEED SKATING (SHORT TRACK)
Women’s 1,000 _ Courtney Sarault, Moncton, N.B., won her qualifying heat (1:27.798); Alyson Charles, Montreal, placed third in her race (1:29.863) _ both advanced; Kim Boutin, Sherbrooke, Que., was fourth in her race (2:04.62), did not qualify.
Women’s 3,000 relay _ Canada (Courtney Sarault, Moncton, N.B.; Florence Brunelle, Trois-Rivières, Que.; Kim Boutin, Sherbrooke, Que.; Alyson Charles, Montreal) will compete for a medal after winning their semifinal heat (4:05.893).
Men’s 1,500 _ Steven Dubois of Terrebonne, Que., won the silver medal (2:09.54); Pascal Dion, Montreal, was seventh in his semifinal (2:15.271) _ did not advance; and Charles Hamelin, Sainte-Julie, Que., was disqualified in the semifinals after incurring a penalty.
