What are the South Yorkshire mayoral election 2022 results?

Voters in South Yorkshire have elected a new Metro Mayor in the 2022 local elections.

The mayor is directly elected by voters in the districts of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield to serve a four-year term. The previous regional mayor was Labour MP Dan Jarvis, who decided not to seek a second term.

The mayor will work with the leaders of the four South Yorkshire councils and has responsibilities in areas such as transport, housing and planning. Six candidates stood in the election and the parties represented were the Social Democratic Party, the Labour and Co-operative Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservative Party, the Green Party and the Yorkshire Party.

The mayoral election uses the Supplementary Voting system, which means voters were able to pick a first choice candidate and a second choice candidate. If a candidate receives more than 50 per cent of the total first-choice votes cast then they are elected. If not, second-choice votes are counted for the two candidates with the highest number of first-choice votes. The candidate with the most overall votes wins and is elected as the Mayor.
