What are the Covid rules if I feel sick at the moment? All you need to know as wave peaking in Ireland

The current wave of Covid-19 may be causing confusion for some as restrictions remain non-existent but public health advice has been updated.

While there are no rules in place for the mandatory wearing of masks, health officials have been encouraging the public to wear them in busy places to avoid catching the now-rampant BA. and BA.5 strains of the virus.

As well as this, experts are recommending that people experiencing even mild symptoms related to Covid should remain at home while testing.

Isolation continues to be advised even for those who have received their first round of Covid-19 vaccination, had a booster, or had Covid-19 in the past.

The most common symptoms to look out for, according to the HSE, are:

  • fever (high temperature - 38 degrees Celsius or above) - including having chills
  • dry cough
  • fatigue (tiredness)

Less common symptoms include:

  • loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this could mean they're completely gone or just different to normal
  • nasal congestion (runny or blocked nose)
  • conjunctivitis (also known as red eye or pink eye)
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • muscle or joint pain (aches and pains)
  • different types of skin rash
  • nausea or vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • chills or dizziness

The HSE insists that “if you have any symptoms of Covid-19, even mild ones, you should:

  • self-isolate (stay in your room) until 48 hours after your symptoms are mostly or fully gone
  • wear a face mask if you have to be around other people"

You should do these even if you have completed your first round of Covid-19 vaccination, had a booster, or had Covid-19 in the past.

Meanwhile, you can get a PCR test if you have symptoms and you:

  • are age 55 or older and have not had a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose
  • have a high-risk medical condition
  • have a weak immune system (immunocompromised)
  • live in the same household as a person who has a weak immune system or provide support or care for them
  • are pregnant
  • are a healthcare worker
