The Met Gala is one of the most prestigious events in US showbiz and scoring an invite is no easy feat.
Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has presided over the guest list for the exclusive event since 1995, meaning she gets the final say on who goes and who stays at home.
Even megastar Kim Kardashian spent years trying to secure a place on the guest list, with it being claimed in Anna's biography that she felt the Kardashians had "zero style". It wasn't until 2013 that Kim was finally invited alongside her then-boyfriend Kanye West.
However, things are bound to be different for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when it comes to scoring an invite, right?
Well, it's been reported that it's not about the Vogue guru's personal views on if a celebrity gets a coveted invite or not – as it all weighs on how fashionable she thinks the star is.
A source previously told Page Six: "It’s Anna’s party, and just because you’re not invited doesn’t mean she doesn’t like you necessarily — you may not be up to her fashion standards.
"The tickets are also very expensive. You either need to have $35,000 for a ticket or a designer wants to dress you and pay for you."
Even those who buy a table for the event must have their guests vetted by Anna in order for them to attend, so being in with a chance of posing on the staircase of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is impossible if Anna is a fan of your style.
Anna has previously made some gushing remarks about Meghan, 41, in 2019 – before she left the Royal Family.
In the Vogue's web series, Go Ask Anna, she revealed: "I read somewhere that there were members of the royal household that were confused and upset that she woke up so early, at 5am.
"She’s a normal California girl who gets up early and does yoga and meditates. She also sent a lot of text messages. I mean, what did they expect? That she was going to send messages via pigeon? I think she’s amazing."
Anna also shared her verdict on the Duchess of Sussex's wedding dress as she said at the time: "The royal wedding had the whole world watching, and I think that her choice was brilliant. It was sophisticated, it was chic, it was grown up.
"It was an English designer [Clare Waight Keller], albeit one that was working for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world: 'Yes, I'm from somewhere else, but I belong.
"I thought she looked fantastic. The fact that she chose to walk down the aisle by herself, I also thought spoke for an independent woman."
Meanwhile, Anna is also reported to have said she's had been inspired to wear suits by Prince Harry's wife.
In a 2019 appearance at the Women in the World summit in New York, according to Page Six, Anna said: "Maybe it’s a little bit boring and time to change. I’ve been thinking a lot about suits recently so … thank you to the Duchess of Sussex!"
She added: "Obviously, her style is fantastic.
"When she went on that trip to Australia and New Zealand, she was very respectful in choosing a lot of unknown Australian designers to wear, which was great. But I think, more importantly, she’s really bringing modernity to the royal family in a way that is inspiring."
Anna's comments on Meghan and her style all took place before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to step away from their roles as senior working royals. She has remained silent on Meghan since.
In recent years, Anna did have a relationship with the late-Queen after the pair met at London Fashion Week in 2018.
Following the Queen's death last year, Anna paid tribute to the late monarch as she said: "For 70 years, Her Majesty was a beacon of continuity and a perfect example of someone who lived by a clearly defined set of values.
"We hear so much about the end of an era but her passing, after so many decades of dedicated service, is undoubtedly that.
"I might have left England for America years ago but the admiration I felt for her has never diminished."
And PR expert Jordan James said the ongoing drama surrounding the couple and their fallout with the royal family may cost them an invite.
It certainly wouldn't come as a major surprise if they were snubbed given their current status within the Royal Family and the ensuing drama."
However, others think that the pair attending other major Hollywood events means they could be put on the guest list.
Royally Us podcast hosts Christine Ross and Christina Garibaldi told listeners they expect the couple to be invited to the exclusive do.
Christina said of their recent appearance at Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi’s vow renewal in Montecito: "It was definitely an A-List Hollywood guestlist and I think that’s where Harry and Meghan want to find themselves — on that A-List Hollywood circuit.
She continued: "I think this is the first of many times we’re going to see Harry and Meghan in these A-List circuits. I would keep an eye out on things like the Met Gala, the big red carpets this year, to see where they are going to find their place in the celebrity minefield."
However, Unlocked PR CEO Jordan added that, due to the King's Coronation being five days after the Met Gala, the pair might not be able to go even if they are invited.
"They aren't likely to attend as they will undoubtedly face scrutiny, no matter how hard they may try to minimise fallout - especially with how close this event is to the Royal Coronation," he said.
