What Americans think of the British Royal Family

A recent YouGov survey has revealed that the American fascination with British royalty hasn’t waned since the days of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Despite Prince William and Princess Kate’s modern appeal, Americans are still very much enamored with the late Princess Diana, nearly three decades after her tragic death.

In the poll, Princess Diana took the top spot with a massive 76 percent of Americans rating her “very or somewhat favorable.” Queen Elizabeth II followed closely with a strong 67 percent favorability, while Prince William rounded out the top three with 58 percent. Interestingly, despite expectations that Princess Kate would rank similarly to her husband, Prince William, it was Prince Harry who narrowly beat her, earning 53 percent approval, even after his controversial step back from royal duties in 2020.

Kate, in fifth place, garnered 52 percent, which is surprising given her consistent popularity in the UK. She was recently voted the most popular royal in a February 2025 YouGov poll in the UK. Meanwhile, Meghan Markle, who was born in the US, came in seventh place with a 46 percent favorability rating, just behind Princess Anne, who earned 47 percent. Princess Anne’s high ranking stands in stark contrast to her U.K. poll position, where she ranked third with a strong 70 percent approval from Brits.

In terms of the royals with the lowest favorability, King Charles came in at just 42 percent, far behind his late first wife and mother. Queen Camilla fared even worse, securing the second-to-last spot with just 30 percent approval—a reflection of Diana’s enduring legacy.

And as expected, the royal with the lowest rating was Prince Andrew. His association with Jeffrey Epstein continues to cast a long shadow over his public image, and this has evidently impacted his popularity in the U.S.
