What Alexander Isak did for Real Sociedad amid £180m Arsenal transfer speculation

Arsenal target Alexander Isak left Real Sociedad supporters baffled on Thursday evening as he failed to score when faced with an open goal in his side’s Copa del Rey clash against Real Betis.

The two Spanish sides met in the quarter-finals of the competition at the Reale Arena, with a two-legged semi-final the prize for the victor.

However, the game did certainly not go the way that either Isak or his Sociedad teammates would have envisaged having slipped to a 4-0 defeat and seen their journey in the competition come to an end.

A brace from former Stoke City forward Juanmi had put the visitors in control before the hour-mark, with Willian Jose and Aitor Ruibal also getting in on the act.

Despite defeat, it was also a disappointing night for Isak on a personal level.

With the scores sitting at 1-0 to Betis, the Swede looked like he was going to equalise as he got on the end of Mikel Oyazarbal’s cross just yards from goal.

Having evaded the marking of his defender, a goal looked to be a formality but somehow Betis stopper Rui Silva managed to get a strong arm to the striker’s shot and parry it away from goal.

Isak was of course left aghast - as were the majority of supporters inside the stadium itself.

The 22-year-old will certainly be aiming to improve his fortunes the next time he takes to the pitch against Valencia on Sunday.

He has eight goals to his name already this term - albeit only four of those coming in league action.

It has been claimed that Arsenal remain interested in his services despite failing to activate his release clause in the final days of the January transfer window.

The Sun suggest that a move for Isak will be part of a £180m summer transfer splurge at the Emirates Stadium - Premier League duo Ruben Neves and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also among the candidates to make the switch to north London ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
