What Alex Scott did on BBC amid England OneLove armband decision in World Cup clash vs Iran

Alex Scott did what Harry Kane and England couldn't do against Iran and chose to wear the OneLove armband in the World Cup opener in Qatar.

England's decision to back-down to FIFA's wishes after the tournament organisers threatened to give yellow cards to those wearing different armbands was received badly as it moved away from supporting the LGBTQ+ community and marginalised groups.

Speaking about the decision, Gareth Southgate admitted that he hadn't been part of the discussions, saying, "A lot of discussions have been going on without me involved because I’ve been focusing on the game.

"We are wearing the FIFA armband which has been agreed by collective federations which was agreed overnight I believe. We are in the middle of that, we’re trying to focus on the game frankly."

That didn't stop BBC pundit Scott from making her own statement though, chosing to wear the armband pitchside whilst presenting ahead of the match.

The statement regarding the issue from the FA said: "Fifa has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in Fifa World Cup games.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways."

Kane will be wearing the standard Anti-discrimination armband.
