Manchester United fans fume after UEFA Liverpool gesture at Old Trafford

England got their Women's European Championships off to a winning start on Wednesday evening, overcoming Austria courtesy of an early Beth Mead strike.

Excitement has been building ahead of the tournament, which is being hosted in England, as Sarina Wiegman's side look to go all the way and taste success on home soil. Various grounds across the country have been selected to stage fixtures, with Old Trafford the first venue to be selected.

A crowd of 68,871 spectators graced the home of Manchester United tonight for the Three Lions' opening fixture and there was a moment Liverpool supporters in attendance at the game are likely to have enjoyed pre-match. With the countdown to kick-off approaching, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was played on the PA system inside the home of the Red Devils.

It's a moment that did not go unnoticed by a selection of United supporters, who took to social media to express their frustration after hearing the iconic anthem. @floraImedicine said: "They just played ynwa at Old Trafford, what a state we are." @Jamiep7 added: "They are playing YNWA at Old Trafford."

Liverpool fans, unsurprisingly, saw the funnier side to You'll Never Walk Alone being aired at Old Trafford. @anpadhCS wrote: "Old Trafford is hosting the opener of Women's Euro 2022 and they played 'You'll never walk alone' there. For once UEFA did something worthwhile." @LFCTom36 added: "As if they’ve just played You’ll Never Walk Alone at Old Trafford."
