'What a journey' - Marcelo Bielsa anniversary offers Leeds United supporters chance to reflect

June 15, 2022 marks four years since Marcelo Bielsa was appointed Leeds United manager. He came to Elland Road with glowing references from a number of football’s most elite managers and coaches and still far exceeded Whites supporters’ wildest expectations.

From the very first minute of his first game in charge, the Argentine got, what had previously been, a very ordinary Leeds team playing extraordinary football. The ascent up the table on the back of a 13th-place finish the season before was beyond anyone’s comprehension.

Promotion wasn’t to be in the 2018/19 campaign but the play-off heartbreak only increased the desire amongst Biela and his troops to go one step further 12 months later. That is exactly what they managed to do as Leeds, following a season that ended in empty stadia, won the Championship title by 10 points and secured a long-awaited Premier League return.

If that season had been good, the first season back in the top flight was even better as El Loco led the Whites to ninth, just three points from a place in the inaugural Europa Conference League. The win against Manchester City at the Etihad with 10 men is a game that, despite having no fans present, will live long in the memory of each and every Leeds supporter who watched the game.

Like all good things, unfortunately Bielsa’s time at Elland Road had to come to an end and even though his exit was announced with his side in a perilous position, the outpouring of love and emotion from fans showed just how good job he had done. There isn’t a day that passes, even four months later, where supporters don’t reminisce about the good and the great times they enjoyed during his time at the club.

On the four-year anniversary of his announcement as Leeds manager, here is how some fans marked the occasion on Twitter.
