About 200 homes and businesses in Whanganui are without power this morning after a car crash brought down powerlines across a main road.

Detours are in place after car smashed into a powerpole on Mosston Rd today.

A police spokesman said lines had been left across the road and detours were in place around the crash while the power company worked to restore electricity.

The road was closed between Tayforth Rd and Fox St.

A woman has been taken to Whanganui Hospital with moderate injuries.

The road where the crash happened is a main link between the town and Castlecliff Beach.

Police said the road was expected to be shut for several hours and asked for motorists to take care in the area and have patience while lines workers repaired the damage.

Powerco said about 200 properties in the suburb of Otamatea had been affected by the crash.

Electricity would not be restored until 7am.
