Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea carnivals: Timings, routes, road closures and parking

A calvacade of lights and colour will fill the streets of Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare this month as the annual carnival rolls into town.

The carnival – the biggest illuminated parade in Europe  - is at 7.30pm on Monday, November 4 in Burnham and at 7.15pm on Friday, November 8 in Weston.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to line the streets of the resorts to watch the parade snake its way around the town.

This year’s parade features around 120 entries including illuminated floats, marching bands, fancy dress walkers and entertainers.

A collection will be made on route with money raised going to support the event.

Burnham-on-Sea Carnival

The route

The Burnham-on-Sea Carnival route (Streetmap.co.uk)

The procession starts at 7.30pm at the Tesco roundabout. It then goes to Love Lane before making its way along Manor Road, Victoria Street and the High Street, coming to an end in Marine Drive.

Parking

Many of the roads in the town close at 6.30pm for carnival.

Parking can be found at the Oxford Street car park and Pier Street car park.

Road closures

The following roads will be closed from 4pm on November 4 to 1am on November 5

  • Ben Travers Way
  • Berrow Road
  • Church Street
  • The Grank Foley Parkway
  • Hawley Way
  • Highbridge Road
  • Love Lane
  • Marine Drive
  • Adam Street
  • Chapel Street
  • Cross Street
  • High Street
  • Manor Road
  • Marine Drive
  • Oxford Street
  • Pier Street
  • Regent Street
  • South Street
  • Victoria Street
  • Vicarage Street

Parking

  • Pier Street (300 spaces) near to the B&M superstore. It will cost £5 to include a programme.
  • Oxford Street, opposite the Lidl car park. It will cost £5 to include a programme.
  • There will be 30+ spaces in Lynton Road/Marine Drive with a donation required.
  • Berrow Road (70 spaces)
  • Beside Swimming Pool - £5 to include a programme
  • South Esplanade (100+ Spaces)
  • On Street Car Parking.

Weston-super-Mare Carnival

The route

(North Somerset Council)

The procession starts at 7.15pm at Locking Road car park and heads down Alfred Street, turns left on to the Boulevard.

It then runs through Waterloo Street and South Parade before turning left at the Cabot on to the seafront (Royal Parade).

After parading along the seafront it will turn into Carlton Street where the parade will finish outside the Town Hall.

Road Closures

These town centre roads will be closed at 6pm and need to be vehicle-free for the carnival to take place:

• Francis Fox Way

• Locking Road

• Regent Street

• Alexandra Parade

• Alfred Street

• Baker Street (to Jubilee Road junction) – for emergency access

• The Boulevard

• Waterloo Street

• South Parade

• Knightstone Road (South Parade to Royal Parade)

• Royal Parade

• Marine Parade

• Beach Road

• Carlton Street

• Walliscote Grove Road

• Walliscote Road (Walliscote Grove Road to Station Road)

• Station Road

• Hildesheim Bridge (parking restrictions on Sunnyside Road North).

When closures are in place there will be no vehicular access to the town centre.

Parking

A car park will operate on the Beach Lawns from 10am. Charges are £5 all day. There is limited disabled parking spaces available to view the procession.

Disabled parking fills very quickly and it is recommended to arrive early as spaces are filled on a first come first served basis.

Those using town centre car parks (Carlton Street, Walliscote Grove Road East and West, Tesco, Walliscote Place, Sovereign Centre, Royal Hotel, Sands car park or the NCP) or are parking  on streets inside the road closures will not be able to exit until the procession has finished.

No wait zones

No waiting cones will be in put out during the morning and will be enforced.

On street pay and display machines on the route will be turned off from 2pm to make sure valid parking is only available until 4pm.

Parking charges on all other streets will apply as normal.

Vehicles should be moved from the procession route by 4pm.

After this time any vehicle parked on no waiting cones could be issued with a penalty ticket, and if considered to be causing an obstruction will be towed away.

Locking Road Car Park

This car park is closed to the public from Sunday 3 November and re-opens on Saturday 9 November.

Programmes

Last year's collection raised £7,910. Programmes for the 2019 carnival are on sale for £1 each at various locations including Visit Weston at the Tropicana and McColls newsagents.
