Westminster choirboy melts hearts as he gives 'performance of his life' at Queen's funeral

Millions across the world tuned in to watch Her Majesty's state funeral service this morning, with some 2,000 guests in attendance from those recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list to world leaders. King Charles III led the procession from Westminster Hall to the Abbey alongside the Queen Consort, with the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children following behind, among other senior royals.

But many viewers were distracted by a red-headed choirboy who gave the 'performance of his life'. The singer was praised by those on social media as he appeared to 'sing his heart out' to the hymns chosen by Her Majesty.

One of the hymns sung was the Lord's My Shepherd, which was sung by a choir at the late monarch's wedding to Prince Philip in the same abbey in 1947. Another sung by the choir was a specially-commissioned choral piece, composed by the Master of The King's Music, Judith Weir, Like as the Hart.

Buckingham Palace said the piece was "inspired by Her Majesty's unwavering Christian faith".

Following the Sermon, the choir sang the anthem, My soul, there is a Country, set by Hubert Parry, which the Queen chose as "an anthem of great hope", Buckingham Palace said.

The choirboy who stole the show was filmed passionately singing during the Psalm 42: 1-7, moving expressively as the choral music filled the historic church.

One Twitter user wrote: "I'd like a dedicated camera on little ginger choir boy at QEII's service. He's giving 150 percent and I'm here for it."

Another wrote: "Obsessed with the red headed choir boy giving the performance of his life at the Queen's funeral."

A third said: "I need more footage of the ginger choir boy, he's clearly living his best life #queensfuneral" and one more said: "The little red-headed choirboy has stolen my heart with his earnestness".

Crowds of mourners lined the streets of London to wave a final farewell to the late monarch as her coffin travelled through the capital while the rest of the UK appeared to be ' quieter than Christmas Day' - with shutters drawn and empty motorways.

After travelling to Windsor Castle, the Queen's coffin has been lifted from the state hearse and carried into St George’s Chapel ahead of the committal service.

The procession was led into the chapel by members of the Queen's royal household.

Once again the King followed behind the coffin, accompanied by the Queen Consort, with the Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence behind, then the Duke of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

The Queen, who died on September 8 at the age of 96 at her beloved Balmoral, will be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at St. George's, Windsor, this evening following a private family ceremony.
