West Virginia has issued a statement in the wake of coach Bob Huggins’s arrest for allegedly driving under the influence Friday evening in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny West neighborhood.
“West Virginia University is aware of an incident last night involving head men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins, for which he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) in the City of Pittsburgh,” the statement reads. “We are gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete.”

Police said Huggins, 69, was blocking traffic when they pulled him over around 8:30 p.m. ET on Friday evening. The Hall of Fame coach proceeded to fail a sobriety test, after which he was taken into custody.
Huggins had already entered the summer on thin ice after using an anti-LGBTQ slur during a May 8 radio hit on WLW-AM in Cincinnati, for which he was suspended three upcoming games and docked $1 million in pay.
The Hall of Fame coach has won 863 games with Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State and the Mountaineers. He led the Bearcats and West Virginia to Final Fours in 1992 and 2010, respectively.
