West Tyrone MP calls for further safety measures along the A5

A West Tyrone MP has called for additional measures to be introduced on the A5 to improve the safety of the road.

Órfhlaith Begley said the Garvaghy section of the road was in need of particular attention due to nearby housing and facilities in the area.

Three young men were killed in a collision in Garvaghy in December, making it four lives lost on the A5 in December.

Following a meeting with the Department for Infrastructure to discuss the issue, she said she had requested additional slip roads, lighting and other safety measures.

"I have requested that serious consideration is given to enhancing safety features on the road to make motorists aware of residential housing, a restaurant and the other facilities at the Garvaghy section,” the Sinn Féin MP said in a statement.

"During the meeting with DFI I had requested for additional slip roads, lighting and enhanced safety measures at this stretch of the A5.

"DFI are meeting with the police this Friday to consider additional safety measures.”

She called for the Department to bring forward an environmental statement needed ahead of the latest public inquiry into the much delayed A5 Western Transport Corridor project.

She added: "The long awaited A5 dual carriageway would enhance road safety for all users and improve lives for so many people in the local community.

"The previous public inquiry ended in March 2020 and we are still awaiting on an addendum environmental statement from the Department.

"This is one of the most dangerous roads on this island and there is a need for the Minister to bring urgency to reconvene the public inquiry."

In a recent statement, the Department for Infrastructure said work was ongoing to complete the environmental assessment required to progress to a public inquiry.

“Work is ongoing to complete the new Environmental Statement Addendum so that the public inquiry could be re-convened this year,” a spokesperson said.
