West Lothian youths hurl 'bricks and bottles' at firefighters attending emergency

Firefighters arriving to tackle a blaze in West Lothian were targeted by yobs throwing bricks and projectiles, preventing them from being able to extinguish the fire.

The incident took place in Fauldhouse, West Lothian, on Monday 21 March, when firefighters from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service arrived to extinguish a fire on Harthill Road.

The crew arrived at the woodland area at 6:30pm and were met with bottles and bricks being hurled by yobs, eventually having to wait until the police arrived on the scene to deal with the incident.

The Scottish Daily Express reports that no injuries have been reported but fire chiefs have since hit out and said what happened was 'completely unacceptable'.

They also vowed to track down the 'small minority' who attacked the emergency workers and 'ensure they face consequences'.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Group Commander, Steven Michie said that crews who stand on the frontline to protect people should never be obstructed from carrying out their duties.

He added: "I would like to stress that this behaviour – by a very small minority of individuals – is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"Wherever possible we will identify those responsible and pass that information to our police partners. This can have serious consequences for those involved. It can even affect future employment prospects due to having a criminal record.

"Fortunately, there were no injuries to firefighters or damage to the fire engine in attendance at this incident. But this type of behaviour cannot be condoned, and we would urge the majority of law-abiding residents to alert the police to any such reckless activity. Young people can also provide information anonymously via the Fearless Crimestoppers website."
