Almost two decades of working as a volunteer in the local community has been recognised on the floor of the House of Commons, in a tribute to Jemma Boyle from Armadale, by local MP Martyn Day.
In spite of complex physical disabilities, Jemma`s volunteering journey started in 2003 with the British Heart Foundation as a retail assistant before helping out with admin duties at the Ability Centre.
For the past 15 years, Jemma, 35, has volunteered with Voluntary Sector Gateway West Lothian (VSGWL) in Bathgate.
Mr Day’s Early Day Motion to the House read: “That this House congratulates Jemma Boyle on the celebration of her 15 years as a volunteer with Voluntary Sector Gateway West Lothian (VSGWL); notes that Jemma began volunteering in 2002 with various organisations before joining the VSGWL; recognises the enormous contribution Jemma makes to the VSGWL through the varied work she does; commends Jemma’s commitment to volunteering; and thanks her for her dedication to helping others in her local community.”
Jemma has played an important role in supporting the work of the Gateway by carrying out reception and admin duties and supporting delivery of Saltire Awards. Jemma regularly helps out at events during the annual Volunteers` week celebration, Volunteer of the Year awards and various third sector forums.
Jemma began volunteering as a way to get her out of the house and socialise with other people at a time when she was also struggling to find paid employment. She feels proud being a volunteer and she has received many awards throughout the years which she is extremely proud of. Volunteering has helped her to keep her mind focused and positive.
Alan McCloskey, CEO, VSGWL said: “Jemma is a ray of sunshine in the office. She is always so cheerful and has a wicked sense of humour. In spite of the physical challenges she faces, Jemma’s commitment to helping others is incredible. She is an inspiration to everyone that she meets. In 2020, 2.9 million people in Scotland volunteered in some capacity. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our communities and as Jemma shows, can also be hugely beneficial to individuals who come forward to help others. I am delighted that her 15 years of outstanding commitment with VSGWL has been recognised in the Houses of Commons.”
