A meeting of Armadale and Blackridge local area committee heard this week that tree planting would begin on 7 March.
In a report to committee Countryside manager Eirwen Hopwood said the Green Action Trust had started ground works on the site of the new woodland at the abandoned football pitches at Nelson Park.
Her report added: “Community planting is likely to take place from 7 March. Schools and community groups will be contacted shortly regarding participation in planting events.
“Roughly 1,700 trees are to be planted, along with the creation of a wetland area, pathway and site signage. ”
The former park and pitches had been earmarked for council housing until 2018 when site inspections found that surrounding private house building had caused drainage issues on the site. Local Independent Councillor Stuart Borrowman had been pressing for the site to be developed into community outdoor space.
West Lothian Council has been working with a Green Action Trust on plans since last June when the parkland was designated as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy a unique initiative which invites people from across the United Kingdom to plant a tree for the Jubilee.
