West Lothian residents get chance to question officials over swimming pool closure threat

Campaigners hoping to save West Lothian swimming pools and a theatre facing closure will have the chance to question officials in a public meeting this week.

A public information meeting is to be held on Wednesday June 7 about the proposals between 4pm to 6pm at St Margaret’s Academy, Livingston.

But space in the venue is limited so attendance is strictly first come first served.

It will be the first time officers from West Lothian Leisure Trust have faced public questions about the controversial budget plans.

The hall at St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston is large but to ensure that all interested groups and as many members of the public as possible can attend, the council is asking those that wish to attend to apply.

Anyone wishing to attend must complete an on-line form before Noon tomorrow (Tuesday, 6 June).

Officers from the council and West Lothian Leisure Trust, the arm's length charity which runs sport and leisure facilities for the council, will attend to answer questions and provide information behind the proposals.

Three swimming pools Xcite Livingston, Xcite Armadale and Broxburn pool face closure. Howden Park Centre in Livingston is also under threat.

Writing on social media the council said: "West Lothian Leisure (WLL) has requested the council’s consent to close four facilities that they currently operate.

"Work is under way to explore alternative commercial and community options for running these facilities.

"Those interested in the future of these four facilities are invited to attend a public information meeting on Wednesday 7 June between 4pm-6pm. The meeting will take place at St Margaret’s Academy, Livingston.

"Officers from WLL & West Lothian Council (WLC) will be available to provide information and answer any questions."

The council added: “To ensure that there is space for as many groups as possible to attend, we would ask that, if you are part of a large group/organisation, representatives from your group apply to attend, rather than all members. This will ensure that all groups and as many members of the public, as possible, can attend.”

West Lothian Council has already made an agreement to provide £20,000 a month to ensure that Howden Park Centre can remain open until the end of March next year.

It is believed that locally based organisations are working on proposals to take on the management of the theatre.

The pools face closure in August unless an alternative can be found. The Trust's plans have to be ratified by the council.
