Network Rail, the Scottish Ambulance service and various police vehicles were all spotted in Tesco's Bathgate and on the road leading to the train station, with the car park in the supermarket next to the train line cordoned off for safety.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "British Transport Police were called to Bathgate station at 2.34pm today (19 January) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the procurator fiscal."

Valid train tickets are also being accepted on selected Edinburgh Tram services.

Affected passengers can also travel on alternative rail routes, where applicable, between Glasgow and Edinburgh via Falkirk High and via Cumbernauld.
