Staff at Early Steps Nursery in Bathgate decided to take their fundraising up a gear after having to cancel past events due to covid.
To make this year one to remember, owner Carol Armstrong approached her team and suggested they take on a real challenge to raise funds - by taking part in a a Firewalk through Firewalk Scotland.
To her surprise the team were more than willing to take part. From this initial idea, the ideas kept coming and soon the event grew into something much bigger.
Carol’s husband suggested arranging a Classic Car Show during the day leading up to the Firewalk in the evening and Classics Against Cancer was born. With the addition of a Car Show, they decided to include a Raffle with donations from many local businesses plus entertainment.
Over 110 classic cars were on display with some rare examples in attendance. There was even a reenactment from Smokey & The Bandit with the Bandits Trans Am being chased by three American Police cars, while KITT from Knight Rider watched on.
As the evening approached, the fire was started, and the Ukulele band entertained the crowd. The
Early Steps Team were joined by Breast Friends &a Family who support St Johns Oncology, Team Jak Foundation; Jaks Den, Janice Coulter (walking for Lanark Cancer Research) and Team Mila taking part in the sponsored Firewalk. In total about 27 people faced their fears to take part cheered on by a crowd of well-wishers.
With donations from the Classic Car owners and members of the public, plus some fantastic sponsorship for the Firewalk an amazing £10,000 was raised for the charities and donations are still being received.
Carol said: “I cannot believe the support we have had for this event. It has been such a fantastic day. Due to the response, we have already decided to make this an annual event, however we will be looking for a new challenge for next year to replace the Firewalk. We will
also be extending the Car Show to include motor bikes, hot rods, and Military vehicles. on year.”
