West Lothian mum furious after son almost eats 'orange pill' found in bag of Doritos

A West Lothian mum was left furious after her five-year-old son narrowly avoided swallowing an orange pill hidden in a bag of crisps.

Lorna Singleton revealed son Leo narrowly avoided ingesting the mystery tablet after boasting to his mother that he had “found a sweet” inside a packet of chilli heatwave Doritos.

The 39-year-old quickly confiscated the snack seconds before the schoolboy put the unknown item in his mouth.

However the mum-of-two, from Bathgate, said she was horrified by the near miss, adding she was thankful to be around to stop him eating the potentially harmful lozenge.

Lorna said she has since complained to manufacturers Walkers over the incident.

She told the Daily Record: "He was so excited because he thought it was a wee sweet. Just as he was about to eat it, he said look mummy, I found a sweet in my crisps.

"When I looked at it, I was shocked. I couldn't believe it was in amongst his crisps.

"I don't know exactly what it is, but it looks like a pill of some sort .It's not plastic, it's smooth like a pill and does look really like one. It looked like it had been turned orange from the flavouring of the crisps.

"It's scary to think about if he had eaten it what would have happened."

She added: "You don't expect to find anything like that in your food.

"I'm glad I didn't give him a packet at school as I wouldn't have been there for him to show me it and he might have eaten it."

Lorna said she had taken advice over the next steps and had contacted the food giant over the incident.

The manufacturers had asked for the tablet to be sent back to them in a prepaid envelope, but the mum admitted she was conflicted over what to do next.

"Friends and family are advising me to only send half of the tablet back in case the other half gets lost in the post," she said.

"I had considered looking into getting the tablet analysed myself."

A Doritos spokesperson said: “We take all complaints very seriously and the safety and quality of our products are our top priorities.

"We have robust quality control procedures at all of our manufacturing sites.

"Given all these controls it’s very unlikely that such an item would have been found in a bag of Doritos.

“We have asked the customer to return the product to us so that we may further investigate these claims.”
