West Lothian issued thunderstorm warning by Met Office as weather takes a turn

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for thunderstorms across the majority of Scotland and the rest of the UK this weekend.

West Lothian has been included in the list of Scottish counties affected by this weather alert, as meteorologists at the Met Office warn that the dry heat has caused the adverse weather.

According to the Met Office: "Whilst many places will be largely dry, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in some places on Sunday afternoon."

The warning will be in place from 12pm on Sunday, June 11 until 9pm that evening.

Forecasters have told residents to expect the following:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

According to the latest forecast, the Met Office have said: "High temperatures on Sunday will trigger a scattering of showers across the warning area, some of which are likely to be torrential and thundery, perhaps bringing a few places 30-40 mm in an hour.

"The odd place, affected by multiple showers, could see more than this, perhaps in excess of 60 mm in a few hours, this being most likely across Wales and central England.

"As well as rain, additional hazards will be hail, strong gusts of wind, and lightning will be additional hazards.

"Despite this, many places in the warning area will remain dry, or only see small amounts of rain, due to the scattered nature of the heaviest showers."

West Lothian, the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway have all been included in this weather alert, with Edinburgh narrowly missing the weather warning.
