West Lothian brass band hits all the right notes to win Scottish Championship

A West Lothian band hit all the right notes as they won the Scottish Brass Band Championships for second successive year.

Whitburn Band, conducted by Professor Nicholas Childs, won the contest which was held at the Perth Concert Hall.

It takes the band’s tally to a remarkable 22nd Scottish Championships win, with the first coming in 1968.

The title now means they represent Scotland at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, which will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London in October while they will also be invited to compete at the European Brass Band Championships in Lithuania next year.

And there was plenty of individual success on the day, too, as band members scooped awards.

Chris Bradley was named Best Cornet, with Andrew McMillan winning Best Horn while Chris Shanks (Best Euphonium), Paul Kiernan (Best Trombone) and Graham Fraser (Best Eb Bass) also picked up awards.

The bass section of Graham Fraser, Robert Fraser, Alan Gourlay and Neill Gourlay was named Best Bass section, while Chris Yule, Heather McMillan, Ryan Bradley, Hannah McInnes and Fraser Wilson winning Best Percussion.

It was also a double celebration for Whitburn’s Band Chairman and bass trombonist Charlie Farren, who conducted Selkirk Silver Band to victory at the Scottish Brass Band Championships Third Section contest, which was held in the same venue a day earlier.

Charlie said: “Whitburn is delighted to have retained the Scottish title.

“Our thanks go to Nick Childs and also to Bryan Allen, who helped to prepare the band.

“Our focus now turns to the European Brass Band Championships in Malmo, Sweden in a few months where we hope to do Scotland proud.”
