West Kirby venue faces losing licence over noise concerns

A West Kirby venue could lose its premises licence after concerns were raised about noise and music on the site.

An application has been made to Wirral Council by its environmental health department to review the licence at the Wild Inn on Banks Road. According to a report to the local authority’s licensing panel, the grounds for the review are in relation to “music emanating from the premises and causing public nuisance to local residents.”

The venue describes itself on social media as a “Rock / Music bar in the heart of West Kirby serving cocktails, beers, coffee and wine”. Currently the Banks Road site has a licence to trade alcohol from 10am to 12pm Sunday to Saturday.

The licence permits live music until 11.30pm and it can stay open until 12.30am. An additional hour has been granted for the supply of alcohol, the provision of late night refreshment and the hours the premises are open to the public on the following days: Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Bank Holiday weekends and the Thursday before Good Friday.

The report from Richard Leyland, Wirral Council licensing team leader, said a representation has been received from the licensing authority who have reported that complaints have been received from local residents relating to noise emanating from the premises. As a result of these complaints, the premises have been visited a number of times by a licensing enforcement officer who deemed “the noise coming from the premises undermined the prevention of public nuisance licensing objective.”

A total of six representations have been received by residents supporting the application to review the licence while the proposal has also been backed by Hoylake and Meols ward councillor Alison Wright. No concerns have been raised by Merseyside Police, public health or trading standards.

The licensing authority, in this case Wirral Council, may decide that no action is appropriate if it finds that the review does not require it to take any steps that are appropriate to promote the licensing objectives. Any decision taken can be subject to appeal.

The licensing review will take place on Wednesday June 22 at Wallasey Town Hall.
