Ireland have stunned West Indies, knocking the two times winners out of the tournament to progress to the Super 12s and set up a date with England.
In their winner-takes-all match in Hobart, Ireland completed a nine wicket win over the Windies to go with the defeat inflicted by Scotland in their first match. And the truth is, with 15 balls remaining, this was a T20 thrashing.
With leg spinner Gareth Delany doing the business with the ball in the first innings to claim 3-16 from his four overs, the Windies were restricted to just 146-5 in their 20 overs having won the toss and chosen to bat first.
But it was the full blooded strokeplay of long time opening star Paul Stirling, skipper Andy Balbirnie and No. 3 Lorcan Tucker who turned this pressure match into a procession.
Delany was named player of the match and said: "It is an incredible day for us. Last year's tournament was such a hard thing to deal with, so to get over the line in the fashion we did was amazing.
"We came up with a plan for the spinners, keeping it simple and defensive because we knew they would come at us. It is a dream come true and we’re ecstatic about what we can do over the next few weeks to be honest.
"Curtis Campher and George Dockrell gave us a chance to qualify with their performances against Scotland and hopefully we can carry on."
The Irish top order smashed seven sixes as they overhauled their target at a canter and have even given themselves a chance of topping the group above either Zimbabwe or Scotland.
It is the second placed team in this group who will join England's Super 12 group for a game on Wednesday 26th October and that was confirmed as Ireland after Zimbabwe topped the group which makes for a mouth watering contest between local rivals.
For the West Indies the defeat and failure to qualify for the next phase will be a huge embarrassment and a sign of how far they have now fallen in the form of the game that they once dominated while winning the T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016.
