West Highland Way named among Europe hiking routes 'you need to do once in your life'

The West Highland Way has been named in a new list of hiking routes in Europe 'that you need to do at least once in your life'.

The list was compiled by style and fashion magazine GQ Mexico, and features seven routes that showcase 'the great natural beauty that Europe has to offer'.

On the list alongside the 96 mile-long route, which runs from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William, are routes in countries such as Sweden, France, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

About the The West Highland Way, GQ Mexico wrote: "The West Highland Way is the most famous and popular hiking trail in the country. Frequented by thousands of hikers every year, it does not present any particular difficulty and is therefore suitable for everyone.

"The best time to visit it is from May to October, during the rest of the months the weather is very unstable and the rains are abundant. The West Highland Way starts at Milngavie (11 km from Glasgow) and ends at Fort William, with a total of 150 km.

"It crosses the entire Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, offering walkers wonderful landscapes typical of the Scottish Highlands. Each stage is designed to reach a town at the end of the day, so you can stay in B&Bs or hostels and experience the local atmosphere."
