David Moyes is set to give West Ham’s youngsters a chance to shine in Bucharest next week after watching his side seal top spot in their Europa Conference League group last night.
Manuel Lanzini’s penalty earned a 1-0 win over Silkeborg at the London Stadium and means the Hammers avoid a knockout play-off in the New Year, while next week’s meeting with FCSB becomes a dead-rubber.
Last season, Moyes handed five academy players European debuts against Dinamo Zagreb in a similar situation.
“Ideally I would try something similar,” Moyes said. “I’ve got a really young group [in the Under-23s] and if I think there’s any of the boys ready to play…
“I’m watching Sporting Lisbon, a lot of teams play 18, 19-year-olds. So let’s see if they can stand up to it and show what they can do. There might be an opportunity for a few of them next week to get a game.”
