West Ham United vs Crystal Palace LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

A general view of London Stadium - (Getty)

Follow live coverage as West Ham United face Crystal Palace today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Mateta shines in another Palace win. What a revelation this guy has been in the past year. He was a threat in the first half with his movement and headers but in the second he turned into a different beast. He opened the scoring moments after the break, latching onto an Eze through ball and firing past Fabianski. It took until the end of the game for him to add comfort to the result as Nketiah won a penalty which the Frenchman converted, just about. Potter will now realise the task on his hands because, despite the superstars, there is little cohesion among the players. Polar opposites as Palace move up to 12th in a thoroughly deserved victory backed up by the stats. Palace racked up 1.25 xG to West Ham’s 0.44. Delight for Palace and Mateta as they continue to bounce back from early-season struggles.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:51

Five minutes added on in this game. It seems pretty set on the result.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

The two stars of this performance make their way of the pitch, firstly Hughes leaves the field for Clyne.

Substitution Jean-Philippe Mateta Jeffrey Schlupp

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:47

Well another self-inflicted error for West Ham. Nketiah rounds Fabianski again and this time is taken out by him, Mateta has the chance to double the score!

Penalty Goal Jean-Philippe Mateta

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:46

With the odds against them, West Ham are giving a good effort. Scarles is being really positive and tries to whip a couple of balls into the box but they just go astray.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:41

Potter doesn't want to see another man off so replaces Alvarez with Guilherme.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:39

WHAT AN IMPACT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN! Nkwtiah races onto Mateta's through-ball and rounds Fabianski, or so he thought. The Pole does well to get back and dive to stop the Englishman's shot.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

Yellow 2nd/RC Konstantinos Mavropanos

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:36

Substitution Eberechi Oluchi Eze Edward Keddar Nketiah

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:35

Palace are still showing they are dangerous on the counter-attack with only a poor touch letting Eze down. A better touch in the box and he could have tested Fabianski with the second.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:32

Palace managed to deal with West Ham's corner but the Hammers came back and worked it to Alvarez who drilled a shot past the post. They are definitely playing with more aggression and look the more dangerous team right now.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:27

West Ham have seen a lot more of the ball since falling behind but Hughes, in particular, has done well in just killing any momentum they are trying to gain. Nippy touches and annoying fouls is stunting any progression West Ham are aiming for.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:26

Substitution Ismaïla Sarr Justin Devenny

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:24

This is a position where West Ham normally falter further, they haven't won a game in the league after falling behind. All of those games were under their previous manager Julen Lopetegui, but if Potter can change that stat it will be a positive change.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:21

Alvarez is treading a fine line here. He is already on a yellow card and has made two fouls inside the opening 15 minutes of the second-half and he seems to be getting more agitated with West Ham's performance in this game.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:14

Crystal Palace have really struggled with their long-ranged shots today. Eze has now joined Kamada in blasting the ball well over the bar from outside the box.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:13

That was Palace's ninth goal in the first 15 minutes after the break this season. Only Newcastle have more. Someone needs to find out what Glasner is doing at half-time.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:11

Eze drops deep again and tries to find Mateta again but this time he hits it too far out of reach for his forward and Fabianski can come and claim it.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:07

THERE WE HAVE IT! MATETA SCORES! Who else? He races onto a through-ball and as he approaches the box, he just strokes the ball into the bottom corner past Fabianski. He has been the biggest threat and has ignited this game. 1-0 to Palace.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

We are back underway, lets hope for some more excitement!

Yellow Card Konstantinos Mavropanos

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

16:03

Substitution Guido Rodríguez Carlos Soler Barragán

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:54

It looks like West Ham are missing a focal point up front. Obviously, this is out of their control in some parts with injuries but Kudus and Paqueta continue to drop deep with Soucek being the highest player on the pitch for the Hammers at points. Palace have managed to deal with it and it has often led them to counter-attacking opportunities which also have their floors at times with neither team looking that clinical in front of goal.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:51

That was definitely not a classic first half. In fact it was pretty dull, not much to scream and shout about with Palace having a lot of the ball but lacking a cutting edge up top. Sarr hasn't been able to match the pace of the game, and Kamada has hit some wild shots over the bar. West Ham have struggled to get a grip of this game and set-pieces have been their main way of testing Palace and even then, the south London side have dealt with it so far. The Opta computer have the most likely outcome of this game as a draw at 38.4%, hopefully, if it is, it isn't goalless.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

HALFTIME: West Ham 0-0 Crystal Palace

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:48

There is only one minute added on here.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:45

Kamada fires over from distance again. Palace had camped themselves on the edge of West Ham's box and with multiple bodies in the way, the Japanese international fires well over and this time it was wide as well. A really poor effort.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:41

Eze tries a rebona cross and it is cut out. This is the most exciting thing that has happened in the match so far, which kind of sums it up.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:39

Fabianski gets a vital touch to stop Mateta from getting a tap-in. Munoz gets in behind West Ham's defence and plays the ball across but West Ham's keeper blocks the pass.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:36

Soucek is asking about a potential penalty. The Czech leaps up to try meet the ball but seems to be pushed in the back by Munoz. Nothing is given as Soucek turns to look at the referee with a bemused expression.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:35

Yellow Card Edson Omar Álvarez Velázquez

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:32

Once again West Ham struggled to pass their way out and Palace forged a chance from it. Sarr's cross was cleared to the arriving Kamada who balloons a shot well over the bar. Sums up his time in south London so far, just missing a calmness to his game.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:29

West Ham have another chance to test Palace from a deadball situation. These have been the only openings that Potter's side have had so far but they have been really poor from them and this one is no different. The delivery and people waiting in the box aren't on the same page as Palace easily clear.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:25

Hughes and Mateta are such menaces to the opposition. Firstly, Hughes snaps into Paqueta and sets Palace on their way with the French striker then flicking a ball into Sarr's path. The winger has struggled to match the other's intensity but does win a corner.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:22

Mitchell is sitting on the turf holding his ankle. It looks to just be a contact injury as he gets back to his feet and tries to defend against Paqueta on the ball.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:19

Now it is Palace's turn to test West Ham's ariel defending. At first, it was a bit shaky with Mavrapanos heading over his own net but Soucek clears the next corner and West Ham are given a breather.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:16

West Ham have had a couple of chances to get the ball in the box from set-pieces after tough fouls by Munoz. Nothing comes of it as Palace remain sturdy but a sign they might be growing in this game.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:13

FABIANSKI DENIES MATETA! A poor Kilman pass is pounced upon by Palace and Mateta is played through and he tries to catch the Pole off guard by shooting early, but he manages to scramble across and save the shot.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:11

West Ham have the first chance of note. The Hammers just give a warning sign to Palace and Kudus shows why you can't relax around him, he spears an attack and it ends with Wan-Bissaka skewing a volley wide. It isn't his strong point to be fair to him and it nearly turned into a great pass to Cresswell. Anyway, Palace have now got the ball back.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:09

Palace have started really well here and have set up in possession in a really attacking manner. The three centre-backs are all in West Ham's half and the midfielders are quickest to every loose ball right now. A positive opening for Glasner, the complete opposite to their match against Leicester midweek.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:05

Palace have had the ball for the opening three minutes. Literally all of it but it ends with Eze blazing a shot over the bar.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:03

Crystal Palace get us underway in this London derby.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

15:01

The bubbles are blowing which can only mean one thing. The teams are coming out and kick-off is approaching.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

14:52

One team that has managed to get the best out of strikers is Crystal Palace, and on this occasion it is Mateta. He has been lethal since the arrival of Glasner and despite a small blip at the start of the season, it looks as if he is back to the form of last campaign. He holds up play so well but can also apply the finish to moves which has been key in Palace's turnaround. It is a strong line-up but the one glaring miss is Trevoh Chalobah who returned to Chelsea from his loan. Glasner wasn't keen to see him leave but in a positive light, it may mean Guehi is going to stay for one more window.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

14:52

Potter is a manager who usually prefers a back three formation but since arriving at West Ham he has opted for a four-man defence, but with five supposed defenders on the pitch it makes it a fluid system which is something the English coach prefers. Kudus is the man to start up front, with injuries or poor form once again hindering the Hammers up front. They have never seemed to master that position when it comes to big-money signings.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

14:41

Unlike West Ham, Palace kept with their manager and it seems to be paying dividends. Oliver Glasner has turned the tide at Selhurst Park and has got his team performing again. A European push was a possibility looking at their form at the end of last season but now the Austrian will just be focussed on getting as many points on the board and seeing where they end up because this has been a topsy-turvy season for everyone in the league.

West Ham United vs Crystal Palace

14:36

It was a winning start to life in the Premier League as West Ham manager for Graham Potter, albeit a slightly fortunate one. Fulham gifted the Hammers two goals in their 3-2 victory but that won't worry the newly instated Englishman. He has another London derby to focus on now with Crystal Palace travelling west of the capital. Both teams have had a slow opening half of their Premier League campaign but seem to be turning a corner.
