West Ham transfer news: Nat Phillips, Brereton Diaz bid? Who West Ham could buy before January deadline

The January transfer window closes next Monday and West Ham are stepping up efforts to bring in reinforcements to boost their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Here’s what is in store for the Hammers before the deadline.

What they need

The task for West Ham in the final week of the window could not be more stark. Their targets have been clear since the start of the month and remain unaltered.

A central defender, preferably left-sided and young, is the priority as cover for the injured Angelo Ogbonna, while a striker to provide competition and support for Michail Antonio is, once again, high on the wanted list.

Early in the window, David Moyes mulled over a move for a left-back. But in a difficult market the Scot is aiming for his two priorities and remains hopeful of landing them.

Who they want

Moyes is meticulous when it comes to selecting his targets and, given their interest in two clear positions, West Ham have been linked with all number of players this month.

The two standout names so far are Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips, who has gone on the record to state his desire for regular football away from Anfield this month, and Blackburn forward Ben Brereton Diaz.

Brereton Diaz, the Championship sensation who has shot to fame after being called up by Chile, has scored 20 League goals this term. Despite being out of contract at the end of the season, he won’t come cheap with Blackburn holding out for around £25million.

An added complication is that the 22-year-old is now away on international duty in South America and will be until the window closes.

Who could go

With a smaller squad than any of their top-four rivals, senior departures at West Ham are unlikely in the final week.

A couple of youngsters have already moved out on loan while there is also interest in other academy prospects who could leave to pursue game time elsewhere.

Nottingham Forest are in talks over a deal for Emmanuel Longelo.

Panic rating: 7/10
