West Ham to rival Manchester City for 'complicated' Kalvin Phillips transfer this summer

The talk so far this summer has been that Manchester City have identified Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips as one of their top targets for this summer in the bid to replace the retiring Fernandinho. However, a new option has emerged for the England midfielder, with West Ham reportedly keen to bring the 26-year-old to the London Stadium next season.

The Hammers already have Declan Rice on their books and according to reports in The Sun they are keen to bring the successful England midfield partnership from Euro 2020 back together as the Hammers push for a Champions League place next season They are likely to be rivalled by Aston Villa and Arsenal for the Leeds born midfielder but there could well be a complication as he is set to change agents this summer.

His contract at Elland Road is up in the summer of 2024, meaning that his asking price will never be higher, with reports stating that his club could command in excess of £50 million for his signature, which could be out of David Moyes' price range unless he sees Phillips as Rice's replacement. The change of agents could well delay any potential transfer until next summer, giving Leeds the chance to improve the squad in order to tempt their academy product to stay with the club.

Leeds' final day survival is also a boost, with the chance of another Premier League season with guaranteed first team football ahead of a winter World Cup in Qatar. This will be a big factor in potentially keeping him at the club, something which he has already hinted at in recent months amid talk of a departure.

Recently he told BBC Radio Leeds : "I've made what I want to do clear. I've made my intentions clear. I want to be at Leeds and I'll focus on that until my contract ends. I'm not really worried about it too much.

"It's always been something I've been confident about sorting whenever it needs sorting. There's always going to be noise when you're an England international and you're playing for one of the biggest teams in the country, and I think until the end of the season, I'll be happy at Leeds and always will be."
