West Ham suffer major injury blow with £30m signing undergoing surgery after pre-season injury

West Ham United summer signing Nayef Aguerd is set to miss the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season after undergoing ankle surgery.

The Hammers spent £30million on the Moroccan international earlier this summer from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais, but the 26-year-old is now expected to miss the start of the upcoming campaign after being forced off injured in just his second friendly appearance for Moyes’ side against Rangers.

As confirmed by the club, Aguerd underwent surgery following the injury sustained seven days ago, with the defender now set to continue his rehab at the club’s training ground at Rush Green.

A West Ham statement read: “West Ham United can confirm that Nayef Aguerd has had successful surgery on the ankle injury he sustained in our pre-season friendly against Glasgow Rangers last week.

“The Moroccan defender will now continue his rehabilitation at Rush Green with the club’s medical team. Everyone at West Ham United would like to wish Nayef a speedy recovery.”

Aguerd joined West Ham as the club’s fourth most expensive signing of all-time behind Felipe Anderson, Sebastian Haller and Kurt Zouma. The defender had made his debut during the Hammers' 1-1 draw with Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium three days before sustaining the injury in Scotland.
