West Ham set for Jan Bednarek swoop as Craig Dawson nears Wolves move on transfer deadline day

Craig Dawson is edging closer to a deadline day move to Wolves, with West Ham set to bring in Southampton defender Jan Bednarek as his replacement.

Leicester and Aston Villa also remain interested in signing Dawson before tonight’s deadline, but Wolves are believed to be leading the race for the centre-back at this stage.

West Ham received an offer worth around £3.5million for the Englishman earlier this week but are hopeful that interest from the trio of rival Midlands clubs could drive up his price.

The 32-year-old was a key player for West Ham last season during their run to the Europa League semi-final but has struggled for fitness at the start of the new season, while the arrivals of Thilo Kehrer and Nayef Aguerd, as well as the return to fitness of Angelo Ogbonna, mean competition at centre-back is set to increase in David Moyes’ side.

Dawson is out of contract at the end of the season and while Moyes would like to keep him at the London Stadium until then at least, the Scot is reluctantly ready to grant the 32-year-old his wish of moving closer to his young family, who live in Cheshire.

With Aguerd still around six weeks from a return after undergoing ankle surgery and Issa Diop having left for Fulham, Moyes is determined to bring in a replacement and talks have been held with Southampton over Bednarek, with a deal expected to go through so long as Dawson’s exit is confirmed.

A loan move is seen as most likely, with the Pole - a former international team-mate of Hammers ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianski - under contract until 2025 at St Mary’s.
