West Ham’s international break to-do list: Improve crossing and get Michail Antonio firing

West Ham may have slipped back in the top-four race going into this international break but David Moyes feels they are heading into the biggest period of the season.

The Hammers are through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League and are still in with a shout of claiming a European spot in the Premier League.

Here are three jobs for West Ham and Moyes during the next fortnight…

Work on crosses into the box

West Ham are a real threat in the air.

Their prowess at set pieces is well documented but with Tomas Soucek bombing forward they are a danger in open play too - or they used to be at least.

Moyes has fiddled with his system somewhat this season and, in this area at least, things have never quite matched up.

Soucek started the season in a deeper lying role which saw him control midfield but offer little threat in the final third.

He has now been pushed forward and is causing trouble for opposing defenders once more - but the standard of deliveries has plummeted.

Vladimir Coufal has been out of the side through injury and while Ben Johnson is the better defender, the Czech is far more effective going forward.

Find consistency from Benrahma

The loss of Jarrod Bowen to injury has come at a terrible time for the Hammers and, with seemingly no clear return date, others must step up.

Andriy Yarmolenko has scored two remarkable and emotional goals from the bench while Said Benrahma has a goal and two assists in his last two Premier League games.

End product is what Moyes wants from the Algerian but he must ensure that it comes at a consistent rate.

Benrahma has been a hugely frustrating player since joining from Brentford but his potential is undoubted. Moyes has often called for more from the winger.

After a bright start to the season Benrahma’s form and impact on games fell off a cliff. Keeping it up could be key without Bowen.

Get Antonio firing

Moyes lambasted Antonio for a poor performance at Tottenham on Sunday as his run of Premier League games without a goal extended to 10.

The forward, West Ham’s only senior striker, was in fine form against Sevilla as he tormented the Spanish defence and claimed an assist for Soucek.

However, given Moyes has no other options to lead the line, more is needed from Antonio.

There were too many occasions against Tottenham, and in the first half against Sevilla, where a terrible touch let the side down or saw a chance passed up.

If they are to make this a truly special season, Antonio must find his early season form once more.
