West Ham receive Nayef Aguerd boost but fresh concern ahead of Silkeborg and Man United clashes

West Ham United centre-back Nayef Aguerd could make his official for the club on Thursday against Silkeborgafter his £30million move from Stade Rennais in the summer.

The Moroccan international joined the Hammers in the summer but has spent the duration of the campaign so far on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury during his second pre-season appearance against Rangers, requiring surgery and an absence of over three months.

In recent weeks, the former Rennes defender has been gradually getting back to full fitness and having trained with the first-team on Wednesday, Aguerd is set to be involved against the Danish outfit.

“Hoping to have him in the squad tomorrow and have him back one way or the other,” said Moyes.

“What will he bring? At the moment, I don’t want to put too much on him and give him time. He is a really good footballer. He plays the game very well. He is a good reader of the game.

“He is quick enough, he is good in the air. We see a lot of good aspects in him. But because he has not played any Premier League games, it is really difficult for us to give an overall judgement.

“I don’t think he is ready to go into the Premier League yet but he could be ready to play a few of these games.”

While Aguerd is likely to return, winger Maxwel Cornet has suffered a fresh setback following his recent recovery from a calf injury sustained in his full Premier League debut for the club at the start of the month.

Having recently returned to training, the Ivory Coast international’s setback could see him miss most of the games between now and the World Cup, with centre-back Craig Dawson (dead leg) and midfielder Lucas Paqueta (collarbone) still absent.

“Cornet has had a small setback in training so Cornet is not available and I don’t know if it’s another week or another couple of weeks but it’s another set back for Cornet,” added Moyes.

“Daws is improving but is not fit for the game, not fit at the moment. Paqueta is not available because of his collarbone to make it simple. But, hopefully, they are not too far away. It will be really touch and go for Sunday as well.”
