West Ham player ratings: Nayef Aguerd shines as Lucas Paqueta scores in Newcastle United draw

West Ham United managed to secure a precious Premier League point with a 1-1 draw after a hard-fought battle with Newcastle United.

The Hammers looked to have got off to a horrendous start after Joe Willock thought he gave Newcastle the lead inside the first minute. However, his goal was disallowed by VAR after the cross into the winger was judged to have crossed the byline.

The Magpies did take the lead soon after though. Lukasz Fabianski's goal-kick from the restart came straight back at him after Callum Wilson was put through to make it 1-0 with just three minutes gone.

But West Ham responded well and got themselves back on level terms just after the half-hour mark. Declan Rice's corner missed everyone but landed at Lucas Paqueta at the back post who calmly put the ball away.

Here are our West Ham player ratings for the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.

Lukasz Fabianski - Kept busy in the first few minutes and was beaten by a composed finish from Callum Wilson. Came out through a crowd of players to claim a dangerous cross from Kieran Trippier that warranted applause from David Moyes. Had safe hands to deny Wilson's free header midway in the second half. 6

Angelo Ogbonna - Reacted slowly to Wilson's run for the Newcastle opener. Made a key intervention shortly after by heading Willock's cross out of the path of Wilson behind him. Rose well to win a couple of headers inside the box and made a number of clearances. 6

Nayef Aguerd - Star man. Calm on the ball when Newcastle pressed high. Could have put the Hammers in front when he had a free header in the box from a free-kick but directed it over. Like Ogbonna in the first-half, Aguerd denied Wilson from getting on the end of another dangerous cross, this time from Allan Saint-Maximin. Made the tackle of the game when he chased down and slid in on Wilson who was ready to pull the trigger in front of goal. 9

Thilo Kehrer - Made a couple of key tackles and interceptions in the first-half. Signalled towards the bench at the end of the first-half that he had an issue. Substituted at half-time to be replaced with Ben Johnson. 6

Vladimir Coufal - Got stuck in to win a few challenges on the right side and put a couple of crosses into the box that threatened the Newcastle goal. Made a key block early in the second-half to deny Willock's volley. Dealt with Allan Saint-Maximin pretty well. 7

Emerson - Calm when on the ball in tight areas near the touchline. Struggled to keep track of Kieran Trippier at times who managed to put a number of crosses into the Hammers' box. Put in a couple of decent crosses but nothing gained. 6

Declan Rice - Won the ball back on a number of occasions and passed the ball around well in midfield. Charged forward to support West Ham attacks and could have had an assist if Said Benrahma provided a better finish. Put in the corner that Paqueta finished off to equalise. 8

Lucas Paqueta - Lost possession in midfield and that led to the Newcastle opener. Responded well with a number of shots at goal in the first-half and was rewarded with a calm finish that brought West Ham back on level terms. His celebration was pretty special too. A bit lazy with some tackles he put in but a good performance overall. 8

Jarrod Bowen - Pressed off the ball throughout and got involved in a number of battles for possession in central midfield, winning a couple of aerial duels too. Seemed to have been struggling early in the second-half but shook it off and continued to complete the game. 6

Michail Antonio - Arguably should have won a foul in the build-up to Newcastle's opener with Fabian Schar's arms wrapped around him. Hustled well against the Swiss defender and Sven Botman but was second-best in most battles for the ball. 6

Said Benrahma - Cut inside on a couple of occasions to get some shots away but failed to find the target. Battled well for the ball on the left side but ran up a cul-de-sac when in possession on occasions. 6

Substitutes:

Ben Johnson (on for Kehrer 45') - Made a key interception inside the Hammers box as Anthony Gordon looked to latch onto a through ball. 6

Tomas Soucek (on for Paqueta 74') - Came on to solidify the midfield as Newcastle pressed for a winner. 5

Pablo Fornals (on for Benrahma 74') - Saw little of the ball as Newcastle pressed forward. 5

Danny Ings (on for Antonio 81') - Blocked Gordon's goalbound shot soon after coming on. N/A

Flynn Downes (on for Coufal 90') - N/A
