West Ham player ratings: Lucas Paqueta and Tomas Soucek struggle in poor Everton defeat

West Ham United will enter the international break sat in the relegation zone after a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

In a drab Premier League affair, Neal Maupay's second half goal was enough to give the hosts three points.

Here is how football.london’s West Ham United writer Jonty Colman rated the Hammers’ players against the Toffees.

Lukasz Fabianski

Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was back in the starting 11 after rests in each of the last two Europa Conference League games. Barring having to run out to claim one cross, the Polish stopper had absolutely nothing to do before the interval. Made one good save to deny Demarai Gray but will have been disappointed to have conceded to Maupay from distance. 6

Vladimir Coufal

Injuries to Ben Johnson and Harrison Ashby meant that Vladimir Coufal was in the starting side for a fifth straight game in all competitions, moving back to right-back after playing as a wing-back against Silkeborg on Thursday night. In his 80th appearance for the club, he showed good energy and an intent to get things forward and try to make things happen. An okay showing but struggled at times in the second half to deal with Everton's wingers. 6

Thilo Kehrer

German centre-back Thilo Kehrer was been the quickest of the eight summer signings to cement themselves a place in Moyes' best 11, starting in the centre-back duo alongside Kurt Zouma. Everton got a lot of crosses into the box in the first half but Kehrer was good at meeting them. West Ham lacked conviction and quality in passing out from the back, but the same could not be said about Kehrer, who kept the tempo going and passes well across the back line. Continued with a solid display after the break but he, Zouma and Rice were all guilty of not getting near enough to Maupay in the build-up to his goal. 6

Kurt Zouma

Given a midweek rest amid concerns over Silkeborg's artificial pitch on Thursday, Zouma was back in the starting side to reunite has partnership with Kehrer that has been forming in recent league match. Like Kehrer next to him, really solid at the back to defend Everton's aerial approach. Had the best chance of the first half, although his flick-on at the end of a cross did little to test Asmir Begovic. Defended well largely but guilty of not doing better to stop Maupay's goal. 6

Aaron Cresswell

After providing an assist for Craig Dawson in his 300th appearance for the club on Thursday, Aaron Cresswell kept his place in the side to face the Toffees, moving out to left-back having played as a wide centre-back in midweek. Did okay defensively and attempted to swing in crosses as and where possible. Attacked well and many of West Ham's sniffs of a chance came via his crossing. Taken off late on. 6

Declan Rice (Star man)

Captain Declan Rice was in the starting side, having been one of three players to have been taken off on the hour mark in Denmark. The midfield battle really ebbed and flowed between the two teams in the first half, but Rice had put in a good first-half display with a couple of really strong tackles. Tried to make things happen in the build-up to a good chance for Maxwel Cornet in the second half but should have done better in the build-up to Everton's winner. 6

Tomas Soucek

Partnering Rice was his usual midfield partner Tomas Soucek, who has recently been struggling with a minor foot injury. The Hammers' joint-top scorer in the Premier League this eason before kick-off, with one, passed the ball so poorly throughout the game. Defended well but at times a real liability when it came to trying to control the game in midfield. Almost caught out in both halves in posession but did come close with a glancing header from a Cresswell corner that went wide. Far from his best, beaten too easily on the ball. 5

Jarrod Bowen

The form of Jarrod Bowen so far this season has been poor and it led to some calls for Maxwel Cornet to have started ahead of him on the right side, with Cornet impressing in midweek and recently against Chelsea. Still to be at his best in a league game, Bowen grew into the game after a poor first half, despite forcing Conor Coady in a last-ditch clearance early on towards Antonio. Looked more impactful after the goal went in, linking up well with Cornet and Said Benrahma when they came on. 6

Lucas Paqueta

Brazilian star Lucas Paqueta, like Rice, started but was taken off after an hour in Silkeborg. There had been some concerns going into kick-off with Paqueta seeming to suffer a minor knock in the warm-up. Struggled in the game, giving away two early fouls and often not moving the ball quick enough when he had pressure on him. Tracked and grafted but on the ball, his quality lacked what West Ham would have been hoping for from the Brazilian international, who was taken off shortly after an hour. Also lost track of Alex Iwobi in the build-up to Maupay's goal. 5

Pablo Fornals

Spanish winger Pablo Fornals made late cameo in Denmark but was one of those starting on the bench that day as he only played for the final few minutes of the 3-2 win. A really poor display by his recent standards, when West Ham broke down the right, Fornals struggled to get past Nathan Patterson down his side and his crossing and intricate passing did little to unlock the hosts at the back. Created one half chance early in the second half for Bowen before being taken off minutes after Maupay's goal. 5

Michail Antonio

Michail Antonio was an unused substitute in midweek but has been in good form recently, scoring in his last two appearances ahead of facing the Toffees. Had very little service up front, often having to feed off scraps and long balls. To his credit, his hold play and channel running was good at times, drawing a foul out of captain Conor Coady in the first half that got him booked. First chance of any kind came from a flick-on off a Bowen cross shortly before Maupay brok e the deadlock. Taken off with 20 minutes to go and while he did not really test Begovic, he did not do a lot wrong. 6

Substitutes

Maxwel Cornet

Cornet's recent form was desrving of a start and he was very unlucky not to get more minutes, one of two men bought on within minutes of going behind. Won two fouls in quick succession with his pace. Went close twice late on, once latching onto a Rice pass before having a shot tipped over by Begovic, the other saw him race onto a Bowen flick on, where he really should have done better. 6

Said Benrahma

The Algerian, left out of his country's upcoming national squad, came closest to opening the scoring and was one of two players instantly bought on after Maupay's goal, curling a left-footed effort off the post. Showed good speed and link-up passing after replacing Paqueta, something West Ham had been short of prior to the double change. 6

Gianluca Scamacca

Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca is still waiting to make his second start in the Premier League, despite scoring his third goal of the season in midweek at Silkeborg. Booked late on for a foul on Idrissa Gueye. 5

Emerson

Came on in stoppage time in place of Cresswell, hardly got a kick. N/A
