West Ham in transfer deadline day scramble as they push for late Darwin Nunez and Duje Caleta-Car deals

West Ham are facing a late scramble to strengthen their squad for a Champions League push.

The Hammers are continuing to explore last-minute moves for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car and Benfica forward Darwin Nunez but time is against them.

West Ham went into the final day of the transfer window with money to spend after having a club-record £50million bid for Kalvin Phillips rejected by Leeds.

Nunez, the top scorer in Portugal this season with 20 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, is in Uruguay ahead of their World Cup qualifier with Venezuela tomorrow and a deal for the 22-year-old looks unlikely.

Caleta-Car has long been tracked by West Ham, though a move for the Croatia international also looks complicated.

West Ham are pursuing an initial loan due to his lack of experience in the Premier League, but Marseille insist they are only open to a permanent sale.

Leeds also rejected an offer from West Ham to sign Raphinha in what has been a frustrating month for David Moyes.
