West Ham captain rues 'embarrassing' performance as 'too much respect' shown in Chelsea defeat

West Ham captain Dagny Brynjarsdottir admitted her embarrassment as the Hammers showed “too much respect” to Conti Cup semi-final opponents Chelsea in their anaemic 7-0 defeat on Thursday night.

Brynjarsdottir’s post-match comments echoed the sentiments of manager Paul Konchesky, who felt compelled to issue an apology to West Ham supporters after admitting his own embarrassment of the display.

Chelsea were ruthlessly clinical as they fired four past Mackenzie Arnold in goal before the interval, the first arriving inside the opening three minutes and the fourth in injury time.

The Blues added three more before the final whistle, consigning the Hammers to their worst defeat of the season in all competitions.

And Brynjarsdottir has reiterated the ignominy felt in the performance’s aftermath, admitting that the Hammers made to “too easy” for Chelsea to maraud to the Conti Cup final.

“It’s quite embarrassing if I’m being completely honest," she told whufc.com.

“You never want to be losing 7-0 at home, regardless of how good the opposition are. We didn’t start on the front foot and I think we showed them too much respect out there tonight.

“Those goals are too easy for them – we know they do have world class players, but I think we need to do better as a team to make it harder for them.”

The performance arrived in deeply exasperating contrast to the impressive goalless draw against Arsenal in the WSL only four days earlier.

“It’s frustrating – we got a point against Arsenal a couple of days ago and we really wanted to build on that with another good performance against a top side,” Brynjarsdottir admitted.

“We all need to look back at what we could have done better and make sure a result like this doesn’t happen again.”

West Ham return to action after the international break when they host Aston Villa on 26 March in the fifth round of the FA Women’s Cup.
