A West Country farmer has become an internet hit after setting a higher price for 'parking like a wally'.
Ian Flindall put up a sign charging people £3 to park 'neat and tight' and £10 to "'park like a wally'' on his beachfront land. He's now been amazed at how many £10 notes have been posted into his pay box at his small honesty system-run car park on Chypraze Farm, Portheras Cove, Cornwall.
The beauty spot is popular among tourists and locals and is often rammed with cars taking up 'three or four' spaces. The 69-year-old's farm is located at the start of a public footpath which leads to the stunning cove.
He told The Sun : "All we are asking is that drivers park close together so that more and more people can come and enjoy the wonderful Cornish coastline. But I’m still amazed at how many £10 notes have been put in the honesty box because they can’t be bothered to park close to another car.
"I figure they think, 'Well I've just abandoned the car, here's a tenner."
Discussing the 'wally' aspect of the sign, he said: “I had the sign made during the Covid pandemic when we were seeing more and more people coming down here.
“I went to the local sign-maker and asked if he could do it and he was only too happy to oblige. I think it was the first time that he’d been asked to use the word ‘wally’ on a sign."
A photo of the rules was posted on Reddit's /CasualUK where one user said it was a "genius way to stop people parking like t***s"
Another woman posted "Love it down there and the Monday market they have is fabulous". While a third penned: "Trouble is, wallys don’t know they are a wally".
