West Country beach named one of the best in the world - but it's not for the prudish

A stunning West Country beach has been named as one of the best in the world - but it's not for the prudish. Big 7 Travel revealed the globe’s best coastlines and Pedn Vounder, in Cornwall, was the only UK beach to make the list.

Only the likes of Costa Rica's golden sands, Australia's clear blue seas and Italy's picture-perfect scenery beat the Cornish beach, which was ranked eight in the world.

The judges said: "G7 put the global spotlight on Cornwall last year and this year the region has seen sky-high bookings. Despite the crowds, Pedn Vounder is still one of the UK’s most beautiful beaches.

"Combining crystal clear blue water and white sand, it’s proof that you don’t need to hotfoot to the Caribbean for tropical island inspired getaway."

But TripAdvisor reviewers offered a new insight into the location. The beach is now an unofficial nudist spot, so be prepared if you do visit.

One person wrote: "The beach once you manage to get down to it is just the most gorgeous, idyllic treat. Soft white sands lead you out into warm turquoise waters that lap the shore gently. It's a large cove with a number of smaller coves to both sides so naturists and clothed sun bathers can mix relatively happily. On my visit the split was probably 30% naturist."

Another said: "The beach was lovely but this is not a place to take children as there are naked men and women who attend this beach and the path down to it is quite dangerous. However the walk along the top is beautiful and the beach itself is stunning from the top! Just beware of the naked people and dangerous paths."

A third wrote: "Anyone saying this place is anything other than divine is not telling the truth. It IS tricky to walk down to, and you do need to be very careful. Lots of nudists (July) so not for the anyone prudish. Possibly best bathing beach...in the world??"

Travelling from Bristol along the M5, drivers can reach the area in around three hours 40 minutes. For people who prefer public transport, Bristol Temple Meads has direct trains to Penzance.
